Beginning of a Hero by Charles E. Yallowitz

12 April 2023

Via Amazon Title: Beginning of a Hero (Legends of Windemere Book 1)
Author: Charles E. Yallowitz
Genre: Fantasy
How I got the book: I bought it on my Kindle

Summary (from Amazon):

Every hero must take the first courageous step into adventure. For Luke Callindor, it’s more of a blind stumble.

Depending more on bravery than common sense, Luke sets out to protect a royal heir who is attending the prestigious Hamilton Military Academy. With a demonic assassin in the shadows, the determined warrior will have to think on his feet to defend his charge. If only he waited long enough to find out which student is the hidden noble.

With Luke’s dream on the horizon and a deadly enemy on his path, how will he transform from a reckless adventurer to a true hero of Windemere?

My Review (may contain spoilers!):

Let me start off by saying that I don’t read fantasy very often and it’s not typically my thing.

With that in mind, I did enjoy the book but it took me a while to get through it.

We follow Luke on his quest to help an heir, though he’s unsure of who that is. He goes undercover as a student at a military academy and things go from there.

I thought the premise of the story was original and the plot itself was well put together throughout the whole novel.

The characters were fun to adventure with. Luke annoyed me with his stubborness, but then again all protagonists need flaws. Kira and Kellia were wonderful supporting characters, especially as female warriors. Fizzle was by far my favorite character though.

The writing itself was easy to read, but the point of view was third person Luke for a while. Then about halfway through the novel it was sometimes third-Luke and then sometimes third-someone else like Nimby or Kellia, which I found to be strange.

Overall, it was a good read. This is the first of a series so I do plan on reading the other books at some point.

Beginning of a Hero by Charles E. Yallowitz gets 4 out of 5 stars.
