Goal: 500-800 Words
She pushed him back, palms on his chest. “And just what do you think we should do?”
“Don’t look at me.” He shook his head, holding his hands up in the air in surrender. “I’m not the one who pushed him down.”
Heaving a deep groan, the pale female put her fingers to her mouth and began to bite her finger nails. She stared down at the man she had just pushed to the ground in fury and he wasn’t moving. He was breathing, but in shallow breaths.
“Look, Ellie,” her friend placed both hands on her shoulders and massaged her. “Eddie’s not dead. We just need to call an ambulance to make sure he…you know, stays not dead.”
“Jacob!” Ellie threw his hands off of her and glared deeply into his chocolate brown eyes. “If we call the ambulance, they’re going to ask questions. We can’t tell them I got angry and pushed Eddie down and he hit his head on a rock.”
“It was an accident.” Jacob shrugged his shoulders.
“I probably gave him a concussion or something!” Ellie exclaimed throwing her arms in the air dramatically. “They’re going to call the police and claim I assaulted him. Then I’m going to get arrested and go to jail.”
“That won’t be as bad as if we leave him here and he dies.” Jacob pointed to the limp body which happened to be covered in dirt. “Look, it’s getting hard for him to breath. He needs medical help.”
Ellie went back to biting her nails. She began to pace kicking up dirt as she circled the body. She took deep breaths. “Jacob, you’re in this just as deep as I am.”
“Excuse me?” Jacob raised an eyebrow.
“You were here. You were an accomplice to my actions.”
“I was here, that’s all. I’m a witness.”
Ellie whipped her head back and forth scanning her surroundings. “Help me find someplace to hide the body.”
“What?!” Jacob was astounded. “You can’t be serious! He’s not dead! He needs medical help.” He took out his cell phone and dialed the number nine, but Ellie took his out of his grasp and tossed it into the river a few feet away from them. Jacob gaped at the river in disbelief while Ellie smiled.
“That’s it! We’ll throw Eddie’s body in the river. That will wash away our fingerprints. Help me move him.” Ellie picked up his feet and turned her head to Jacob. “You get his head. There’s blood on that end.”
Jacob opened his mouth to protest when he spotted Eddie’s car parked not too far from them. “You know what?” he smiled to Ellie. “I think Eddie has a blanket in his car. We can wrap him up in it which will be easier for us to carry him.”
“Good thinking!” Ellie dropped the feet and gave her friend two thumbs up.
Jacob jogged over to the red Jeep. He opened the driver side door acting as though he was pushing the button to open the trunk. Instead, he grabbed Eddie’s cell phone, which was conveniently sitting in a cup holder. He dialed 9-1-1 and explained the situation as quickly as possible to the dispatcher on the other end, giving out his location.
“What is taking you do long?” he heard Ellie shout.
“Uh, coming!” Jacob replied, hanging up on the police. He opened the trunk and took a peek in, but nothing was there. He slammed the trunk closed and made his way back over to Ellie and Eddie.
“He must have taken the blanket out, sorry.” Jacob shrugged.
Ellie rolled her eyes and groaned. “Whatever. Just help me.” She picked up his feet again.
“Well, wait.” Jacob held up both his hands. “Shouldn’t we say something? I mean, he was a good friend to us and all.” He glanced down at the still body, but noticed Eddie’s chest still rising.
Ellie placed his feet down once more and got teary-eyed. “I guess you’re right.” She kneeled beside Eddie and stroked the side of his face, where he had been struck by the rock. “Eddie? If you can hear me, I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’m sorry I lost my temper, but…you have really stupid jokes and some of them hurt my feelings. I didn’t think I would strong enough to push you down the ground and who knew you would just happen to bash your head against a rock?”
Jacob placed both of his hands in his pockets and cracked a small smile at Ellie’s apology. He began to hear sirens in the distance, but Ellie, now holding Eddie’s hand, was asking for forgiveness. She couldn’t hear the sirens coming. She had no idea what was to come next.
