Prompt — First Sentence: “Where was her book?”
Goal: 500-600 Words
Where was her book? She thought she had placed it on her book shelf with all the others, but it wasn’t there. Then again, why would her items be in the correct spots? That would make her life too easy. She needed a challenge. A challenge to waste time searching for items that never seemed to be where they belonged.
Did she fall asleep in the middle of a chapter? She looked under all her blankets, tossing them to the floor. Did it fall off the bed while she was sleeping? She got down on all fours and peeked under her bed, coughing as dust bunnies jumped out in her face.
Standing back up, she walked over to her dresser and moved a few things around like her make-up, her hair brush, and a lot of other junk that didn’t seem to belong on her dresser. Again, nothing was where it belonged.
Was it in the closet? She opened the door wide enough for her to look around without actually going in her closet. Wait, why would it be in her closet? Who read in their closet? She certainly didn’t. So, she closed the doors.
Once more, she decided to check her book shelf. There were four rows of books stuffed onto each shelf; it was no wonder why she had never put her newest books on the shelf. Where would she fit them? She moved a lot of the books around searching for the spine of her missing book. She was looking for the title, the same color scheme, anything that would allow her eyes to realize they had found it and she could finally stop making a mess of her room.
After all four shelves were no longer in her perfect alphabetical order, she sat down in the middle of the floor of her bedroom. She scratched the top of her head taking one last glance around her bedroom. She really was at a loss as to where this book might have been.
She was a bit sad, as well. It was a really good book to the point that she wasn’t able to put it down. She should have been able to read it one sitting, if it weren’t for the fact that she had to go to school in the middle of the day.
All day she had been dying to know whether the protagonist was going to realize that his partner was in fact the antagonist. She wanted to know what was going to happen next. She needed to know what was going to happen next. She was never going to find out what happened if she wasn’t able to find her book!
A knock came at her bedroom door.
“Come in,” she called still sitting on the floor.
Her father opened the door holding the door knob with one hand and holding a book in the other hand. “I told you that we have company coming over today. You can’t leave your things lying all over the house.”
“My book!” she exclaimed.
Racing over to her father, she snatched the book out of his hand and tossed herself onto her bed. She opened the book, took out the paper that held her place, and began to finish reading.
Her father, very puzzled, looked around her bedroom and noticed the mess. “You live like a pig…” he sighed and closed the door exiting the room.
