Short Story Sunday 134: Bored

12 April 2023

“Why are there so many horror movies coming out?” Kylie scrolled down the movie theater’s webpage with a disgusted look on her face.

Austin shrugged taking another bite out of his peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

“There are no good movies out.” Kylie groaned.

Austin swallowed the last bite of his sandwich. “If there aren’t any movies out that you’re interested in we don’t have to go to the theater.” He stood up from his chair and walked over to the kitchen sink.

Kylie sat back in her chair. “We haven’t been to the movies in a while, though.”

“We have a TV here, you know. And a comfy couch.” Austin remarked putting his plate in the dishwasher.

“They have those new recliner chairs at the theater now.”

“It’s still easier to cuddle at home than it is at the theater.”

Kylie sighed. She exited out of the Internet on her laptop and shut the computer down. “I feel like going out and doing something, though.”

Austin raised an eyebrow. “Well… Going to the movie theater isn’t exactly going out and doing something. We would just be sitting in the dark surrounded by strangers.”

“True.”

Austin craned his neck and looked up at the ceiling. “How about we go bowling? We haven’t done that in a while.”

Kylie made a face.

“Do you want to go take a walk around the pond? It’s a beautiful night out?”

“Nah, the bugs are out.” Kylie shivered.

“Want to go out for dinner?” Austin suggested again.

“Dude, you just ate.”

Austin sighed. “Shopping?”

“You hate shopping.”

“But you love the credit card.”

Kylie narrowed her eyes at her husband. She stared at him with a blank expression trying to figure out what he was trying to do. Finally, Austin sighed.

“I’m out of ideas.” He shrugged. “You say that you’re bored and you want to go out somewhere, but you’re not open to any suggestions on what to do.”

Kylie pressed her lips together. He was right. She was bored, but she wasn’t helping herself out with that. She finally stood up from her chair and looked him in the eyes.

“Okay,” she announced, “you pick something then. You decide what we should do tonight and we’ll do it.”

“No complaining?” he asked.

“No complaining.” She confirmed.

Austin smiled. “Great. Let’s head downstairs. We can curl up on the couch together and watch a movie. No horror, though.” He winked.

Kylie frowned. “But I thought we were going to go out…”

“You said you weren’t going to complain.”

“I thought you would pick something for us to do outside of the house.”

“I’m tired. I don’t want to go out.” Austin stated and then chuckled. “Besides, I bought ice cream today.”

Kylie’s eyes grew wide impressed. She turned away from her husband and headed for the basement door. “I’ll get the pillows and blankets ready while you get the ice cream.”

Austin laughed. “That’s what I thought.”
