Writing is hard.
To whip up an idea from scratch, breath life into many characters, build brand new worlds, and then to sit down and write putting all these thoughts together, is difficult. That doesn’t even include the editing that comes after plus querying, publishing, marketing, and the like.
There is so much work that gets put into a novel it’s crazy. Writers are crazy. I mean, you have to be in order to create imaginary friends, right?
Writers put their blood, sweat, and tears into each and every novel they create. So when someone says, “writing is easy” it’s no wonder our insane side comes out full force. Writers say to them, “If it’s so easy, you write a book!”
There’s a saying that is well known and I have no idea who said it first, but here it is: “If it were so easy, anyone could do it.”
Here’s the thing: writing is not easy and according to the quote above, not everyone should be able to do it, right? Wrong.
Everything we humans do is difficult, if you really think about it. But we all have our own perspective on things.
If you’ve been doing something for a long time and/or you have a passion for it, the job is going to seem easy. It’s going to be fun and enjoyable.
For example, writing is a passion for me. I do it all the time and have been doing it for years. The only reason it’s hard to me is because there’s a lot of work that needs to be put into it. The amount of work can weigh you down at times, but the end result is totally worth it.
Every profession is hard and easy in their own ways. Writing is no different.
Non-writers can write. The only requirement is imagination and a little creativity.
We have complicated minds and when we tell ourselves we can’t do something, we believe it full-force. So if we believe something is hard, we may not even try it. If we believe something is too easy, we’ll go in with arrogance and then maybe end up embarrassing ourselves.
The point is, you never know unless you try.
Writing may be hard for you or it may be easy. But if you have an idea, why not give it a go? We’re all learning together.
