Day Eight

Over The Hump…

It’s a little after twelve in the afternoon and I have to say that’s it been a very good day. My class at school today was 8-9:15, but I left a little before nine o’clock because we weren’t doing anything. She was helping some people sign up for classes next semester, but I graduate at the end of this semester, so it was pointless for me to be there. I came straight home and started to get some more writing done.

I wrote 5,023 words between 9:30 and 12:00. It was a good morning. I wanted to make it to 30,000 words in my story and now I have a total of 30,041 words. Not only am I over the hump for Camp NaNo because I’m more than halfway done, but I am also over the hump of my story.

I explained in my last post that Saving Each Other is just the first part of five in one novel. I’m at the very top of the climax for this part and I think it’s just about done. I have a couple more parts to write for it and I should be good. I don’t know how many words it’s going to take…I like to think it’ll take about 20,000 more words to make it to 50,000, but it might be more or it might be less. We’ll see.

Also, I heard that it’s NaPoWriMo this month, as well? That’s where you’re supposed to write one poem every day during the month of April. Well, why not? I have a lot on my plate already, so let’s go for it. I’m not really good at writing poetry, but I’ve always wanted to get better at it. Of course, because I do have a lot on my plate right now, I decided that I’m going to write a Haiku a day. It’s easier and quicker and since I was a few days behind, I needed something easy to make sure I was able to catch up.

I have eight haikus so far (because it’s been eight days) and I posted them on my website Spilled Ink. The only thing is, you need to be a member to view the Journal section on Spilled Ink (don’t want any guests stealing ideas from the members). So if you want to view them, you need to register. It’s a free Proboards writing website and we would love to have new members because we just re-opened. Of course, if you don’t want to join that’s perfectly fine. For that reason, I also posted the Haikus on my FictionPress account. Check that if you want, but I would really appreciate it if some of you looked at Spilled Ink and considered joining…yes, I am degrading myself and am advertising on my own blog…

Anyway, tomorrow is another day and I hope to make it to 35,000 words! But Tuesdays are really busy, so I’ll settle for the normal 1,667 words.

Update This And Update That

I Have Important Things To Say….

I have no idea where to start! I have a lot to say and I don’t know if I’m going to remember it all. I had Starbucks today and I am extremely wired! Seriously, ask my sister…and my mother…I was bothering them both. Singing, dancing, making weird noises, walking funny, yelling, laughing, falling on the floor, being loud…true story.

ANYWAY, I have three things to talk about…at least that’s all I can remember that I had to talk about…

First, Spilled Ink is back up for business. About two years ago, my sister and I started a writing website. Life got in the way and we kind of let it die. However, we wanted to get back into it so we made a new website for it. We came up with some new ideas for it, kept some old ideas and scrapped the rest of the old ideas. We hope the website grows a lot and is very successful.

Let me tell you a little about it: There are prompts, tips, writing races, co-authoring, and a role-playing section. There’s a place where members can review and discuss books they have read. Also, each member has their own board where they can post their own stories and other people can review the stories. You know, give feedback and critique. The link is on the Come Find Me page of this blog, but here it is again: Spilled Ink. Please go check it out and if you like, go ahead and join. We’d love to have you. 🙂

Next, I was thinking of adding more to this blog. My sister gave me this idea a while ago and I have been thinking of doing it ever since. I just never got the chance to actually do it. I was thinking about it more today and I think I’m going to really do it. However, I want to get your opinions anyway. So, if you don’t mind, please comment on whether you would enjoy this and want me to do this: once a month, I was thinking of doing a volg (video blog, for those of you who don’t know). So, once a month instead of posting words, you’d get to hear it straight from my loud mouth. Wouldn’t that be awesome? I don’t know when I would actually start doing this, but I thought I would throw it out there and see if you guys would like that or not. Of course, if the majority of you say no I may do it anyway. 😀

Third, I guess I should update about my actual writing, huh? I have been writing bit by bit each day since my last post. Since my last post I have written 7,659 words on Take Over. I plan on writing a little more tonight, but I probably won’t get the chance to update this later tonight and tell you all how wonderful I have been doing with my writing! I’ve been a good girl lately. 😀

I guess I do have more to talk about…fourth, my sister and I went to Barnes and Noble today (hence the Starbucks). We were looking at writing books when we were supposed to be writing. I have been thinking a lot about my future lately and I decided that it’s time that I really start looking for publishers. I have two children’s books written and ready to leave the nest. So I found one of those books that lists publishing companies, agencies, magazines, etc. I wrote down a few publishing companies that represent picture books. So, while I finish Take Over, edit Hunter and Diary of a Lover, and write Saving Each Other for Camp NaNoWriMo, I’ll be sending my two picture books off to publishers.

Also, Writer’s Digest sent me a thing in the mail about their annual writing contest. I’ve done it before (and lost, obviously), but that was two or three years ago. I think I’m going to try to do it again this year. I think I’m going to send in a poem. I don’t write poems often, although I would like to. I wasn’t going to bother with the contest again this year, but the other day, in math class of all places, I thought of a poem idea. I think that was my inner muse saying, “Do the Writer’s Digest contest!” Because seriously, when do I come up with poem ideas?

Anyway, that’s that. Send my picture books to publishers, polish off my young adult novels, prepare for Camp NaNo, finish Take Over, do the contest…I have a lot on my plate right now. But I like it. I have wanted to be an author since I was ten and I finally want to get started on it. Meanwhile, I’m going to promote myself as much as possible. So follow me on here, on Twitter (the link is also on the Come Find Me page), and on my other Spilled Ink website. Then sit back and watch me succeed. Because I’m going to make it no matter what. 🙂

Camp NaNoWriMo

Camp National Novel Writing Month…

2013-Participant-Campfire-Facebook-Profile

Show of hands–who is participating in Camp NaNo this year? I know that I am and I have to say that I am certainly not prepared for it…

First, I’m a little disappointed that Script Frenzy is no more. I loved that website and I loved participating. Can you do a script for NaNo? Of course, but it’s not really the same. I think they took down Script Frenzy because not a lot of people were joining it…as far as I’m concerned, there were a good amount of people on there. Most of the people on NaNo were on Script Frenzy.

Second, they changed the dates again. The first year I discovered Camp NaNo was 2011 and it was during the months of June and July. For 2012 it was July and August. Now, for 2013, it’s April and July. I’m glad we can all agree on at least July. I’m sure they changed it to April because that’s when Script Frenzy used to be.

Third, my OCD is kicking it. There are 12 months in a year and three sessions of NaNoWriMo. 12 divided by three is four. Each session should be four months a part. November, March, July. End of story. Of course, that would mean I would have to write 50,000 this month, but…whatever. The way they have it now is obnoxious. November to April is five months, April to July is three months, and July to November is three months. Make it even, please!

This poses as an issue. April is less than one month away and I have no idea what to do for it. Not to mention that I am already in the middle of a novel. I know some people are “rebels” and they just add 50,000 words onto whatever novel they are currently writing, but I don’t like to do that. I like to start fresh. So this means that I have to finish Take Over by April because if I start writing something new, I know for a fact that I will never go back to Take Over. And I really need to start finishing things that I start.

So I am going to try to work extra hard for the rest of this month and try to get Take Over finished up. Then I can start planning for April and…I have no idea what novel I am going to write for that. But I guess I can’t really worry about that right now because I have to focus on finishing Take Over. This is a lot to handle; especially since I’m trying to get school organized and such.

By the way, I finished reading Beautiful Creatures. It was a good book–everyone should read it. But while the movie was great, it really didn’t do the book justice. So if you’re one of those people who gets angry when the movie is completely different from the book, I say watch the movie before you read the actual book. That way, you can enjoy the movie for just a little bit. Anyway, that’s 563 pages added to my pages read count!

As you know because I haven’t posted in a couple of days, I have no written in a couple of days. I have been busy and I have been exhausted. I am, however, going to try my absolute best to finish Take Over by April. That gives me a little over three more weeks and I’m already doing pretty well on the story. I think I should be able to do it.

I just have to cut off all ties with life.

Ready…Set…

…Wait A Minute…

My laptop is fixed. The internet is fixed. The only thing that sucks about it is that it killed my battery…that thing used to last five-six hours. The other day it was at 50% which apparently is now 33 minutes…but whatever! I have to be thankful that the thing actually works again, right? Right! My flash drive is officially gone, but…think positive! Oh, and the printer still won’t work…again, think positive!

Except I haven’t written anything…I haven’t really had the time. Except I’m stuck at school today for a little bit and I don’t have work today. Well, I’m babysitting today, but that’s only for two hours unlike work. Anyway, here is my point: I have to leave for class in about an hour or so, so I think I’m going to begin writing again. Start fresh. Clean slate. After class, which ends at 11:45, but I have a test so I’ll probably be out of there by at least 11:30, I may write again. Although I have a meeting with my advisor at 12:30, so I might just hang around until then. But when the meeting is over, I’m stuck at school until at least 1:45 before my friend drives me home so I can write after the meeting! Although, my friend has a test as well so I might actually get out of here fairly early…

Anyway, I then babysit 3-5ish and then when I come home: BAM! I’m breaking out my typing fingers again. The other day when I pasted “Sad News” I had the hardest time writing it…wanna know why? I hadn’t typed in so long because I hadn’t been in school and I hadn’t been able to use my laptop because of the internet, and I hadn’t been writing at all. My fingers basically forgot how to type. It really was sad news. I’m having a hard time typing now, but I think that’s because my fingers are frozen.

Back on topic: I’m going to write at any moment I can…or any moment I can get to a computer. When I come home from babysitting, I’ll write. And I shall write all night! I’m not going to school tomorrow, even though I have a math quiz.

Everyone has heard of this blizzard that we’re going to get, correct? It’s starting Friday morning and ending Saturday afternoon. I don’t know where any of you are, but in my area we’re going to be getting about two feet of snow as well as some really harsh winds. I doubt I’m going to have school tomorrow, but if I do, the roads and such are probably going to be terrible by the time I get out of class. My class tomorrow is 9-10:15. So I think I’m just going to skip regardless of whether there is school or not. My main concern is work. Fridays I work 11-6 so if my town doesn’t close school, then I’m going to have to go to work…if it is bad then it will be a good thing I skip school because otherwise my poor dad would have to drive all the way to my school and then all the way back to our town to drop me off at work. I live about 20 minutes away from my school, but that’s without traffic and such. With the snow…it would probably take over an hour just to get there.

But again…back on topic: Basically I’m going to be home all day tomorrow, Friday. I highly doubt I’ll have school and work, but we’ll just have to wait and see. I’m praying I won’t have work. But since I’ll be home all day with nothing to do, I’m going to write all day. Saturday, too. It’ll still be snowing and I never do anything on Saturdays anyway, so I can just write all day. I think it’s going to be a very productive weekend!

My only concern is that if the power goes out…considering that my laptop only lasts probably a little over an hour now, I’ll be screwed. Although, I have plenty of notebooks I can resort to, but typing is a lot faster. Plus, I have my iPod and I have apps called DraftPad and A Novel Idea. I’ve explained A Novel Idea before, it basically helps you plan out scenes, titles, characters, plots, etc. It’s really cool, really fancy, and free. DraftPad, another free app, is a blank piece of paper and you just write anything and everything. Then when you’re done, you can post it to a website, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail it to yourself, whatever. So I could use that and e-mail it to myself in case the power comes back on. Then I can start where I left off. But then if my iPod dies…eh, whatever.

So I’m planning a productive weekend and I hope it’s productive for all of you people out there, as well! If you’re in the area and you’re going to get hit by this storm…be careful and good luck! I’ll post back tomorrow morning with how well I’m about to do with writing. 🙂

I Got Nothing Done Today…

Well, I have been on a roll writing for at least one hour every day. However, I didn’t write at all today. But I did say that I was going to try to post on here every day, so here I am. I have no news, but I am posting!

The reason as to why I didn’t write today was because I was busy with my websites. For example, Stars Vs. Gems, Gaia Ranch, and Spilled Ink. Spilled Ink is a writing website that my sister and I are working on together. We already have one up right now, but we completely re-did the whole website. So that’s why I didn’t give you the link because it’s not open yet. However, we  are planning on opening it on Columbus Day…maybe sooner. I’ll explain more about the website when it opens.

Once I finished working on our websites for the day, I thought about getting some writing done, but when I looked at the time I realized that I wasn’t going to have enough time. Although, now that I think about it, I could have written a little bit. Getting a little something done is better than nothing. But oh, well. What’s done is done.

I had a very busy day today because of church. Everyone knows that I’m the co-director of the Sunday school, correct? Well, today the Bishop came for a visit. Plus the Sunday school were performing something in the middle of the service. Also, we had a luncheon for the ladies who run the Thrift Shop to say thank you for everything they do for the church. Usually, I’m at church from 9:30 to 12:00. Today, because of the Bishop’s schedule, the service was 2 to 3. But because of the thing the Sunday School did in the service, we needed to practice it. So we told everyone to come at one, which meant that I was there before one. Then after the service, we had the luncheon and, well…I was at church today from 12:45 to 6:00. It wasn’t a bad time, but I just didn’t want to be there for that amount of time as well as it being smack in the middle of the day.

Anyway, when I got home, I was starving (there wasn’t any food I liked at the luncheon) so my sister and I got Panera and we’ve been watching TV ever since. I’ve been too tired to do anything else. Although, I think I might go plan out the novel a little bit.

The Blank Page has three novels in it and I thought that I should plan those out. Not fully, but just enough so that when I have my characters writing them, they all make sense. So I may do that, but as far as actual writing goes…I’m not going to be boosting my word count tonight.

Speaking of planning out the novels, though, I found this really cool app on my iPod. It’s called “A Novel Idea.” It breaks everything down. You can click on “novels” and will ask you the title, setting, theme, tone, POV, premise, plot, and group. The group is something you make up. You can group certain things together. For example, when I plugged in The Blank Page, I put it under the Writers Group group. The other sections are “scenes,” “characters,” “locations,” and “ideas.” It’s very detailed and organized. I added The Blank Page as a novel and added Dominic, Justin, and Adair as characters. Then it allowed me to attach the novel to each character. It also allowed me to give Dominic, Adair, and Justin relations to each other. It really keeps you organized. I think I may use this to plan out the three novels that aren’t real. Then I might know enough information about them so Dominic, Justin, and Adair can write them efficiently in The Blank Page.

If you like to write and have an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or anything along those lines, then you should download this app. It’s really useful and it was free. I highly recommend it.

Enjoying Myself

I May Be Having Too Much Fun…

I have been doing a great job keeping up with everything I said I was going to do! If I may say so myself…for example, my sister and I admin a few websites together (all the links are on the Come Find Me page, they’re all RPG sites) and we made a schedule so that at least one of us is on every day for our members. I’m supposed to go on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I haven’t really missed a day yet!

Then, I said I was going to write more. With the exception of January first, I have written every day so far. I told myself (I never mentioned anything about it on here because I thought about this at three in the morning the other day) that I was going to post on here every single day this year. Or I’m going to try to, anyway. However, I usually post about my writing. So in order to post on here, I have to write a bit first. So I guess it’s another motivation thing to get me to write every day. I also said that I was going to treat this like a NaNo month. I’m keeping up with that, as well. I should have 4,839 words today but I just got up to 5,843. Yay me!

I also said that I was going to read more, but…we’ll still wait and see how that goes. I said on GoodReads that I was going to read 20 books this year, so as long as I make it to that goal, we’re good. It would be nice to make it past that goal, but you know…other things get in the way.

Anyway, as you know I am writing The Blank Page and I am really having too much fun with it. I am in love with the characters that have developed for this story. Adair and Justin argue like an old married couple. Justin seems to be bothered by every little thing Adair does and Adair knows this. So she tries to do everything in her power to bug him with it. Also, at the beginning of chapter two she bought a large coffee with two bags of cookies. I think she has a bit of a sweet tooth…

And then there’s Dominic…he’s the peacemaker, even though he is amused by Justin and Adair’s arguments. But he also wants to get things done. Except when the other two finally shut up to get things done, they actually work on their novels while poor Dominic is stuck not having a clue what to write. But it’s okay, he just figured out a plot!

Writing this story is also really interesting because they’re each writing different genres. Adair is writing fantasy, Dominic is writing a mystery, and Justin is writing an adventure story. Writing this series is going to be like writing three different books at once without actually writing them. It going to be fun and interesting, but I am going to have to take a lot of notes to keep everything straight. Good thing for sticky notes! 🙂

Well, that’s really it for today. I’ll post again tomorrow with my newest word count.

2013: 5,843 Words

Wait, It’s December…?

Well, I Tried…

NaNo is over. It’s been over for four days and while I realized that it was December, I guess it never sunk in that NaNo was actually over for yet another year. I have come to a conclusion, though. NaNo is my BFF. Yes. Big, fat fail.

I never wrote all those words that I said I was going to write. Even when it got to be only three or four days left, I only wrote an extra 1000 words. I never even broke 30K, even though I was pretty close. However, I did break 25K, which is half. So I guess that’s a good thing.

So my profile on the NaNo website is now going to say I won 2009 and participated in 2012, 2011, and 2012. I was so hoping for another win, but I’m not going to complain. I made it half way at least. Not to mention that I got a good portion of the novel done. The characters are being good (so far), the plot is moving along nicely (so far), and I think it’ll be quite easy to finish (yeah right). I just need to get the motivation to do it.

NaNo and I had a good run this year. I started off doing great, but too much life got in the way. Just because I didn’t get a “win” out of it, doesn’t mean that I didn’t get a good novel out of it…even if it’s no finished. But it will be finished. Maybe when I’m 50. But it will be finished eventually.

I have been thinking a lot about my writing lately on account that I did fail NaNo. I really thought that I was going to win again this year and I really thought that I was going to actually finish the whole novel. But since I didn’t make it to either of those goals, I decided that I’m going to do my very best to write in the months to come.

I have the rest of this week, all next week, and then three more days (finals) of school. My Christmas shopping is already done and wrapped, so once school is out I’ll have all Winter break to type away. My only concern is that I have to study for my MTEL test, which I am taking in January. Oh, and learn how to drive. That’s kind of important. But when it comes to writing, I think I should be good.

For the Spring semester at school I need to come in five days a week, but it’s only three classes. I’ve had all three of these professors before. I know that I’m going to have virtually no homework. So I’m hoping that next semester will be a good semester for writing. It’s just that I’ll probably pick up a few extra hours at work.

Speaking of writing though, I was exploring my blog because I basically just update posts and nothing else on it…so I was looking around and I noticed on the Challenges page there is something that says I was going to write 360 pages by the end of this year. When I made that goal for myself I was in the middle of writing…well, whatever novel it was, and had hoped that 360 pages would have been the whole novel plus some from another novel. I completely forgot about this goal, so I changed it a bit. Basically, it just means that I have to write 360 pages total. Of any novel. So I added my Saving Each Other pages to that count. I am now up to 109 pages. This means that I have to write 251 more pages by the end of this year.

I have 27 days to do this, which should be about 9 or 10 pages a day. I can do that no problem if it’s double-spaced. I don’t know if I’ll actually do that, but I did say that I was going to try to write as much as I can during this Winter Break. Anything I write will go straight towards that page count. Honestly, I can’t even remember why I made that goal in the first place, but I’m going to stick with it. Why not?

I have a huge list of ideas that are swirling around in my head, but I’m going to try my best to finish Saving Each Other first. Then I can freak out about what to edit as the pile is going to keep building up. Right now I have two novels that need to be seriously edited so I can publish them and now I’m just going to be adding on an extra novel.

Hm. This should be interesting.

Day 10

23,081/50,000 Words

Huh. It’s been a few days, hasn’t it? Well, the reason I haven’t updated this thing is because I haven’t written anything since my last post, which was Day 6 (Tuesday). I had a huge writing day on Tuesday and I was very proud of myself…except that I haven’t written since. This is what happened:

Tuesday I wrote while in school. After school I had that dumb doctor’s appointment. I was there for an hour and a half. I told my doctor that I was still tired, my rash is still all over my body, I’m still coughing (although it’s much better than it was) and I’m still wheezing every once in a while. School doesn’t help because I’m walking around in the freezing cold which probably makes it worse. When she listened to me breath she said that I still have pneumonia, which I figured because that takes a long time to get rid of. So, they decided to check my oxygen level, then draw blood, then get a couple of x-rays and fun stuff like that. Then we found out that everything was normal. So they gave me a second inhaler and sent me on my way. So now I have two inhalers to take.

Wednesday, my boyfriend and two friends came over. Chris, my boyfriend, was going to help my friend Christina with her math homework. Carolyn, Christina’s sister, was having a party at school the next day and she needed to make oreo balls for it. If you don’t know what oreo balls are, you should look it up and go make some; especially if you’re a woman PMSing. They are FANTASTIC. All it is are oreos and cream cheese rolled into balls dipped in chocolate. Can we say Heaven? Anyway, the math online wouldn’t work so the four of us (well, Chris ditched us and sat in the other room because us three girls were getting a little crazy…) ended up making the oreo balls. Except we messed up (if you have ever made them before you’re probably saying, “How do you mess up on making oreo balls?” Well…if you met me and friends in person you’d answer yourself with, “Oh. Because it’s THEM making it.”). So we had to run to the store while it was snowing a lot and the roads were terrible. The car was slipping and sliding all over the place. It was a fun time.

Thursday, I had school and work and was utterly exhausted by the time I got home from work. So I didn’t write or anything because I ended up going to bed around 9:00. Yesterday, Friday, I had school and then work and then I had to babysit. I was going to write while the kids were in bed, but I never ended up babysitting. Again, I was in bed by 9:00. Here’s why:

I got out of my last class with a voice mail on my phone. It was my doctor. “Hi, Rachel! We got the results of your x-rays and guess what? We found traces of mono in your system. You don’t actually have it, but apparently you had it maybe about three months ago. So that’s good, you were sick and didn’t even know it! Even though you don’t have it now, your body may still be fighting a bit of it off because you’re weak from the pneumonia and such and that’s probably why you’re so tired and not getting any better.” I’m thinking to myself, three months ago was August. I was in Disney at the end of August. You mean to tell me that I had mono when I was in Disney? Wonderful. Anyway, I called her back and she told me that I should stay in this weekend and get some extra rest. If I don’t feel any better by Monday I should come back in.

This made me mad because I had to cancel babysitting last night, I had to cancel my hair appointment this afternoon, and I was supposed to go out with Chris and his friend tonight and I can’t even do that. I know for a fact that I am not going to be feeling any better by Monday because I have been like this all week. My nose is really stuffed up and has been all week. Trust me, every single day at work the kids said to me, “Why do you sound funny?” I’m thinking, You sound funny! I can at least pronounce all my words correctly!

Anyway, the only good thing about staying in all weekend is that I get to catch up on my writing. Missing four days, that means I’m down by 8,000 words. So I should be at 25,740 today. That would be the 6,000 I missed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and the extra 2,000 for today. As you can see, I stopped at 23,081 words. I have been writing all morning and I needed to take a quick break. I will most likely get some more writing in later today or tonight. I will definitely make it to the 25,740 words…possibly more. But I updated my word count on the NaNo website and on here because I wanted to fill you all in on what’s going on. Plus I wanted to make it seem like I’m still here.

When I write some more tonight, I may post again. If not, I’ll see you all tomorrow!
