After a busy April of Camp NaNo, blogging, and other projects, I’ve finally published my latest story on Wattpad.
It’s called Take Over and is YA general fiction. It’s not the kind of story I’d typically write, but I had originally written this story for NaNo a few years ago. Like, a long time ago. I can’t even remember.
I liked the idea though and wanted to see it through. I couldn’t see it being published, but I think Wattpad is a good fit for it.
Here’s what the story is about:
Senior year of high school is all about living it up and making the most of your final year before stepping into the real world. For Roxie Smith, she just wants to get through the school year. She doesn’t mind quietly doing her homework and begin prep for college. High school hasn’t been her favorite fun time and she can’t wait for summer to roll around again.
For her friends and Brad, her boyfriend, however, they really want to leave the school with a bang. They want to be a legendary senior class and they want to go down in history for all the classes after them.
Brad comes up with an elaborate plan to take over the school and teachers disguised as the annual senior prank. Roxie knows it’s a bad idea. She knows it’ll get out of hand. Her friends shun her when she decides to take no part in the take over. None of the teachers believe her when she tries to warn them and she has the whole school against her.
Some say senior year is the best. For Roxie, it’s going to be a long one.
I hope it sounds appealing to you and that you’ll give it a try. This has been long in the making and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

I’ve been working on a novella specifically for Wattpad for a few months now. It’s been through a lot including three name changes. Some of you might know the story as “Special,” others as “The Librarian,” and now it’s finally “The Scribe.”
This novella originally started as a special Short Story Sunday. It ran through the month of August, each part being posted on Sunday and ending with a poll. My readers chose what they wanted to happen next in the story. You can read the original story HERE. Through that, it sparked some new ideas for me.
I decided to expand upon the story in November during NaNoWriMo. The story ended around 50,000 words, which was fine for me because I wanted it to be a novella.
After editing for a long time (and I mean a long time), I got the story to around 17-18,000 words. It’s a fantasy with Greek mythology roots. Here’s what it’s about:
“When one Scribe becomes three, three Fates will become one.”
Sadie Powers is an average college student. She has a couple of good friends and a boyfriend and has straight As in her classes. So, why does her science professor want to see her in the library late one night?
Professor Hobbs, well known by the students as “Crazy Hobbs,” gives Sadie a notebook. He claims it contains special paper. He wants her to keep it a secret and to use it wisely. He knows she will do great things with the notebook.
Believing him to be crazy, Sadie heeds his words with a grain of salt. But when he shows her the Room of Destiny hidden within the school’s library, Professor Hobbs explains Sadie is the next Scribe. She is to keep order and balance within the seven billion people residing on Earth.
The Scribe’s job is supposed to fix any unjust or premature deaths using her notebook and powerful quill. How is she supposed to tempt with Fate? Because, as far as Sadie knows, magic doesn’t exist… Does it?
So, I’m proud to say The Scribe is finally published on Wattpad! I’ll be uploading one chapter every day until the story ends. I do hope you give it a read. I’ve worked hard and I’m happy with how it turned out. I hope you are too.

We all know that I’m not the best at self-editing. I’ve gotten better over the years, but I tend to end up proofreading rather than editing. I know what I want to fix but can’t figure out how to fix it. So I skip it to “deal with it later.” And that’s not good for any writer and their novel.
I’ve decided to give myself a good kick and really make 2018 count. No more “prep” for this or that and then never following through. I like to think I’m a hard worker, but I’m pretty slow. I think I’m ready at this point to finally do something about my writing and I think it shows in my editing.
A few months ago I talked about Rainbow Editing your manuscript. It’s all about using various colors for different parts of your novel. For example, I use the colors in the following way:
Red – Typos, spelling, grammar Orange – Dialogue, description, pacing, tenses, etc. Green – Plot changes Blue – Character development Purple – Research and fact-checking Pink – Overall structure, vocabulary/word replacement, etc.
I started using this method to edit The Scribethis month and I can’t express how impressed I am that it’s working for me.
Instead of losing steam after 10 pages, I edited over 60 in one sitting. Which, admittedly, is a big deal for me. My manuscript is marked up with mostly orange, green, and blue with a little red, purple, and pink sprinkled in. I’m cutting probably about 75% of the story, so the majority of the pages are filled with a giant green X.
I think this method helps me focus on one thing at a time rather than looking at the whole picture and getting overwhelmed. And no, I don’t go through a chapter six times in a row for each individual color, I look at each page, each paragraph, and think to myself, “what’s not working here?”
After I mark up a paragraph or a few with green and/or orange, I look back at it making sure the character development makes sense, that the paragraph should be in that spot, etc.
It’s hard to explain, but it actually works and I have to say I’m impressed.
It’s a slow process, but it definitely helps. The pages of my manuscript are so colorful and maybe I just get easily distracted by pretty things that it’s holding my attention more: “How much color can I splash on this page?”
In all seriousness, I have to rewrite more than half of this story, which I’m in the process of. So… it’s going.
I still have about two weeks to finish the rewrite and give it another good edit. I still plan on publishing the story onto Wattpad in January. So, wish me luck!

If you know anything about me, you know that I work on one writing project after another. I alternate working on multiple projects at once. I get a lot done on these projects. But when it comes to editing, it’s a slow-going process. Sometimes it’s non-existant.
My plan was to have my mystery novel 100% edited by the end of this year and start querying it in January. I did really well working on it at the beginning of the year and then somewhere I got lost along the way. Or my novel got lost. I don’t really know.
Needless to say, I’m taking a break with that one. I hate to say it, but I really need to re-evaluate my plan to tackle that novel. There’s a lot more to figure out than just “editing” it as far as research and deeper plot holes go.
Writing mysteries are hard. I love it, it’s fun, but there’s so much information to remember and to figure out when writing each mystery. And since my novel is the first in a series, I feel the need to figure out the rest of the books before I can fully understand the first mystery. It’s a little hard to explain, you’ll just have to trust me on that one.
So maybe that novel will be ready by December 2017. Because I’ve decided that George and Lilah need a vacation. So I’m not going to look at my manuscript until January 2017. If inspiration happens to strike, then I will most definitely put that to good use, but for right now I’m going to take a step back and then look at it again as though I’m editing the first draft in January.
I know I said I was going to have my sister look at it, but I’m not even going to do that just yet. Maybe next summer.
So, the point of this whole post (now that we’re over 300 words into the article) is that Kris and I had one of our quarter-life-crisis-things when it comes to our writing.
I try to make deadlines for myself and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. In the end, I know the deadline is “fake” because it was set up by me and I have no one to answer to, except me.
But the reason I do so well with NaNoWriMo is because the deadline is “real.” I have to give my manuscript to someone by the end of the month. That someone being the NaNo validator, but still, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Plus, NaNo is kind of like a competition. And who doesn’t like a fun competition?
So Kris and I decided to commit to one novel each. We both have a novel that’s mostly written, but the first draft isn’t quite finished.
For me, it’s The Lost Girl. I wrote 58,000 words of the novel back in April for Camp NaNoWriMo, but the actual story wasn’t complete.
I know I wrote a post a while ago saying my plans were to finish the novel, edit it in the summer, and then post it on Wattpad in November or December. Well, this may come as a shock to you, but I haven’t touched that story since the end of April.
I was focused more on why George and I couldn’t get along and then when I finally threw in the towel for that one, I decided to work on short stories.
Anyway, Kris and I are going to hold each other accountable for our novels. She committed to her fantasy novel and I committed to The Lost Girl. We’re going to work on our manuscripts for at least one hour each day and finish our first drafts by October 1st. Including today, that gives us 32 days, 32 (or more) hours to finish these drafts.
Then, on October 1st, we’re going to write each other letters about our manuscripts, things that we think need work, what we need to edit or research, the works. Then we’ll swap manuscripts and the other will read and critique it. We’ll set a deadline for that and then we’ll go from there.
It’s still a deadline set up by me, but I have someone to answer to other than myself. My manuscript will be leaving my hands in a month even if it’s just going on the desk across from mine.
I think this will work.

Pretty much since I started writing I always wanted to create my own covers for my novels. I never knew how–what programs to use, how to get the pictures legally, etc. So I never bothered… Or I would, but I just wouldn’t show it to the rest of the world.
Yet, whenever I can, I try to take pictures of nature or other things that strike me at the time. I tend to use the camera on my phone, which takes great pictures. However, when I learn to use my real camera then I’ll start bringing that with me to places.
I recently got Photoshop and while I took a class on it in high school, it’s an updated version… and I probably still wouldn’t remember how to use it even if it was the same version.
But I did my best and creating graphics can only get better with practice.
It’s simple as I have to work with what I have and what I know. Though I think it came out pretty well, if I do say so myself.
The background was taken from the backyard of the family I babysit for. I took the picture myself with my phone.
I had other ideas for the cover, but as I don’t have a model to act as the protagonist for the cover, I decided to go easy and simple.
Sometimes I think simpler can be better.
I hope this cover does the novel justice!
I would like to say, “It’s not like I’m going to publish this or anything,” but I do plan on putting this story on Wattpad when it’s edited (hopefully by the end of 2016 or very early 2017).
I made a Wattpad account a while ago hoping to get more of my original work out there other than just quick Short Story Sundays. I still haven’t posted anything on there, but I think The Lost Girl will be the first one.
I don’t really think The Lost Girl will be publishable by a traditional publisher and I don’t have the desire to attempt to self-publish it. So I think Wattpad would be a great fit. It would be like the next step up from my blog. Of course, I’ll still continue to give updates on here and let you all know when the next chapter is up.
But that won’t be for a while, so don’t worry about it.

I read different books than what I said I was going to read, but I still managed to read four books this month as planned.

I’m editing George Florence at a slow pace to figure some plot holes out and also let my writer’s group look at the first few parts. The problem is, this won’t start until October. I’m going to concert the night of my writer’s group meet, so… Oh, well.
I sent in a short story to Writer’s Digest’s Popular Fiction contest. The early bird deadline was September 15, but you can still submit. The actual deadline is October 15. The entry fee is just five-dollars more.
I also started outlining a new novel (novella, maybe?) called To The Fullest. It’s a working title and I plan on posting that story on Wattpad when it’s ready. At this time I don’t know when the story will be good enough to post on Wattpad, but I’ll let you guys know when I have a ballpark time. I’m hoping by January at the latest.
Not too much new on the blog, as usual. However… I did hit a milestone!
My goal for each month is to try to hit 1,000 views. I got a little over 1,000 views back in June, which was a huge accomplishment for me.
I didn’t think I would hit that goal come September because of work, babysitting, Sunday school, etc. I was way busier this month than I was over the summer.
Well, I hit way past my goal. My blog has hit over 1,200 views this month and that’s not including today and tomorrow.
So, thank you so much everyone! I only have you guys to thank for this. I’m glad so many people keep coming back for more.
I know the views and visitors are different, but the amount of visitors I had this month skyrocketed as well. I have no idea why, but I just have to hope I keep doing what I’m doing!
September was a great month! It was super busy, but I’m glad to be back in a routine not just with my writing, but with work and everything else as well.
I am super excited that another session of NaNoWriMo is coming up soon!
I usually don’t start thinking about it until October, but that’s right around the corner.
I was wondering what I was going to write since I decided that I was going to edit George Florence for the time being.
Last year I wrote a short story a day. Some came out pretty good and some didn’t. However, I missed writing one specific story. So I don’t think I’m going to do that again this year.
Since I decided to post some original novellas on Wattpad, I figured I will work on one of those for NaNo.
I plan on writing those in notebooks first. Then type them up later. That way I can edit as I type it up and that’s one draft down.
So between now and then I’m going to outline one of the stories (I haven’t decided which one I’m going to write yet) and start writing it in a notebook. Since handwriting will take longer than typing, I’m going to start in October or whenever I finish the outline.
I hope to have the story finished by November 1 so I can type it up for NaNo. I know starting early is technically “cheating.” However, if I’m able to handwrite and/or type 50,000 words during November, then I think that’s fine. You guys won’t tell on me, will you?
This week I have gone to work and babysat more than usual. I edited my short story and sent it to a contest and also edited the second-first draft of George Florence. I sent it to my writers group and then realized I won’t be able to make it to the next meet.
But I at least got the first part edited, so I guess I can’t complain about that.
I have been so tired that I’ve been coming home and plopping myself down on the couch and that’s my day.
I get my writing and editing done in the morning before work so I haven’t been skipping any days, but now that I decided to solely work on editing George Florence I’m out of things to work on.
I mean, that’s not really true. I have a huge list of ideas of novels for various age groups and genres. However, I want my sole focus to be on George Florence.
I probably will edit the next part, especially since I’m not going to meet with my group until the end of October at this point.
At the same time, it’s kind of nice to take a break from writing a novel.
I have a few short stories I would like to work on, plus some original pieces I want to work on for Wattpad.
It’s funny because I usually have a hard time trying to decide what to write because I have so many ideas and I want to write them all at once.
Now that list has kind of turned into a “waiting list” as I put certain ideas on hold so I can focus on George Florence for the most part.
He’s an attention hog, I guess.
So I pretty much already decided that’s what I was going to do, but I thought I would recap.
Next week will be less busy, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to make more progress. Although, I think I did a pretty good job this week balancing everything out.
I got a lot of writing, editing, reading, and blogging done this past summer. It was great! With no work and no school to tie me down, I was able to focus on what I hope to be a career someday (soon… in the near future… hopefully…).
I had plans to finish my rewrite of George Florence by July 31. That didn’t happen because the rewrite came out a lot longer than the original first draft. So I changed the deadline to August 31.
I still didn’t finish writing it.
I was writing it the other day and found two plot-holes. You know, because this is the second time I’m writing it so why would I have discovered a giant hole in the plot the first time around? Even after I’ve outlined it twice and everything.
I’m trying to figure out how to fix it. One problem is an easy fix; it’s just math (blech). The other problem might take a while. I know I need to go back and add in a few more things in order for everything to make sense and come full circle.
With that being said, I’ve decided to take a break from writing the novel.
I edited the first 20 or so pages of the story to the best of my ability (I keep a list of editing notes as I write to remember for the revision process). Now I’m going to send that to my writers group.
After a couple of months of them looking at the first half of the novel I’ll probably start writing it again. We meet once a month so I’ll probably start writing it again come January. So by that time they’ll have read roughly 100 pages (I’m including January’s meet).
I’ll pick up the writing again to bring in the new year because by then I should have figured out a way to end the novel and make everything full circle. Plus, I can incorporate any suggestions I get from my group.
Of course if I figure it out before January, then I’m not going to wait until January. I just want to give myself some time.
Does that sound like a good plan? I hope so.
In the meantime, I don’t want to stop writing completely.
There are a few contests I would love to try and a few literary magazines I would love to submit to. I have a couple short stories under my belt and a few more ideas for short stories. I’ll be working on those for the time being.
I will also be working on other novels… or novellas, however they turn out.
I recently joined Wattpad and have a few ideas to put on there. I have yet to write them so it might take a while before these stories are posted, but I’m working on it.

I want to get more of my original writing out there to share with you guys other than the Short Story Sunday and Time To Write features. Those are usually silly, quick things I write. Some turn out better than others. So I want to show you guys that I can actually come up with a plot and make it work.
I’ll probably post it once the whole story is written so I can update regularly.
I’ll let you know when the first story is up, which might be a little while.
