What Inspired Crossroads

Crossroads is my next Wattpad story that was originally a novella turned into a novel turned into the first book of a trilogy. I’ve been wanting to talk about what inspired the story for a while and I thought now was the time to do so.

The Seven Deadly Sins

One of the big inspirations behind this story are the seven deadly sins and their counter virtues.

I have six main characters all who find each other in one way or another. They help one another out on their individual journeys though not lightly in the beginning. Each character was inspired by one of the seven deadly sins.

  • Pride
  • Envy
  • Gluttony
  • Lust
  • Wrath
  • Greed
  • Sloth

I only used five of the sins thought – I took out gluttony and lust. Yes, I do have six characters, but I’ll tell you the math in a minute.

The virtues that act as counterparts to the sins are listed in the same order as they are above:

  • Humility
  • Kindness
  • Abstinence
  • Chastity
  • Patience
  • Liberality
  • Diligence

Again, I only used five taking away abstinence and chastity since those are the counterparts to gluttony and wrath.

Each one of my characters represents sin and a virtue that is not the counterpart to their sin. They all, in a way, balance each other out. They learn from each other and, over time will inadvertently learn about their counterpart through one of their companions. Thus, becoming better people and la-dee-dah.

(Oh, and I use five out of the seven instead of six because of the characters doesn’t pertain to any of that. But, you’ll see when you read it.)

How did I come up with this?

Accidentally. I had started writing my characters and as I had learned more about their background, motives for their own goals as to why they’re helping the other characters, I realized they sort of fit into their own categories. Somehow, I thought of the deadly sins and there we go. It was a huge inspiration for their motives and story goals.

It’s been a lot of fun to write, actually. Novels tend to have a certain theme that goes along with the plot and a lot of it has to do with my characters’ choices, whether they’re right or wrong.

Camp NaNoWriMo Tasks

Believe it or not, we’re already onto week two of Camp NaNoWriMo. All I’ve got to say is… so far, so good.

What I’m Working On

I normally write 50,000 words no matter what session of NaNo it is, no matter what time of year it is. However, I’ve gotten so behind with my writing the past month or so that I missed some deadlines I had set in place for myself. One of them being my next novel on Wattpad.

I planned on publishing Crossroads at the beginning of June. Of course, I never finished editing it so I didn’t upload it. So, I gave myself a new deadline. I’m re-worked the whole outline and am rewriting the book for Camp NaNo.

Of course, I originally planned on editing it. When I started editing it, I realized I had some serious work to do on it. My Camp NaNo goal is to work on 31 hours of editing (1 hour per day) though I’ve actually been re-doing the outline and rewriting it instead. I’m not going to change my goals though. I don’t know how long this book is going to end up being and I think since I’m getting back into a writing routine, working at least one hour a day on it is a good start.

I gave the story a new release date – September 2, 2019. So, whatever I don’t get done in July, I can do in August.

About Crossroads

This is a fantasy story styled as a role-playing-game. At least, it was inspired by RPGs such as Dungeons and Dragons. I’ve created my own characters in various classes to go on a grand adventure together that will be three books long. Yep, book one will be coming to Wattpad in September 2019 and books two and three will be coming out in 2020.

I thought of this idea a few months ago and decided to finally write it for April’s Camp NaNo session. Hence, editing it in May and publishing it in June. Now, I’m rewriting it, will edit it at the end of July and August, and it’ll be here in September.

I’ll be putting together a blurb of the book soon, so you can keep an eye on my Coming Soon page here to learn more about it. Or, just keep up with my Wattpad account. I’ll also be posting some tidbits on social media like Twitter and Instagram and, of course, this blog. However, my patrons on Patreon will be first access to everything plus some extra goodies that will be exclusive to my patrons. Anything Else?

2019 is already a quarter gone. Which is totally weird to me, but hey! It’s the first Camp NaNoWriMo session of the month and I’m super excited to be working on a new project and some old ones. So, here are my Camp NaNoWriMo goals for the month.

Crossroads

This is a working title for my next Wattpad novella. It’s an RPG-style fantasy. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever written before. It was inspired by the video game Octopath Traveler. I created my own world and characters. I made great outlining progress on it in March and have been breezing through the first few chapters in this past couple of days. I can’t wait to see how the first draft turns out! Crossroads will be coming to my Wattpad on June 3, 2019.

George Florence & The Perfect Alibi

George and Lilah are killing me. We’ve been together for so long at this point that they really just need to find their own place and get out of the nest. Don’t get me wrong, I love them to pieces. But this book, the first in a series, has been a work in progress since 2011 – give or take. So, this month, I’ll be continuing the revising stage. I’m only going to work on it during weeks two and four of Camp NaNo though. I don’t want to work on too many projects in one day for an entire month straight. In addition to revising, I’ll also be continuing my timeline for the whole series and planning the other books. I need to get my head on straight with this one.

Sunday Morning (Vol. 1)

Of course, I’ll be working on some finishing touches, marketing, etc. This collection of flash fiction will be here at the end of the month! More information is on my Patreon Page and I’ll also be talking about it more in-depth on the blog tomorrow, April 4. Yes, this means a release date (which you might already know if you head over to Patreon).

Sunday Morning (Vol. 2)

There is a title for this one that I’m not sharing yet. The first volume compiles the first 53 stories I’ve ever posted on my blog, revised and remastered. I’m taking the next 52 stories from the blog and putting them into volume 2. I’ll spend the final two days of Camp NaNo putting this together before I begin the rewriting stage in May.

A Writing Update

Happy Wednesday! I know a did a WIP Wednesday update last week, but I mentioned in that post that I haven’t done a whole lot of writing. I figured some things out over the weekend and I thought it was time for me to do a writing update on that.

Getting Ahead

I’ve been so focused on trying to get ahead with blogging and other things so that I can focus on writing that I haven’t been focusing on writing… I mean, I’m been making great progress in other things, don’t get me wrong. However, we’re halfway through March and what do I have to show for it when it comes to writing? Not much, to be honest.

Last week was totally up in the air too. We were waiting for my nephew to be born. He came a day earlier than the due date so most of my time was spent visiting them at the hospital and going to their house. Everyone is doing well and we’re all blessed to have another baby in the family!

Over The Weekend

I made a new calendar for myself over the weekend. At the beginning of the year, I listed what projects I had planned on working on each month for all of 2019. Each project has a deadline for every stage of writing all the way to publication. I go in spurts sticking with it so I made a new calendar and assigned projects to each day. Monday through Friday I’ll be working on novels and such while Saturdays will be one-offs, short stories, etc. Sundays will be a break day unless I’m in the mood to work on something writing related.

This Week

With that said, this week I’ve been working on two projects. Sunday Morning – yes, this is still coming. Way later than I originally thought, I know. Once the book is out, I’ll be writing a post about why it took so long. There are a lot of factors to it. However, I have a new release date for it and a solid plan to get it all done by then, pre-orders and all. There will be more on that later.

I’ve also started (I was supposed to work on it all month) outlining my next Wattpad novella. It’s a fantasy, RPG-style. I haven’t really written anything like it before but I’m excited to give it a go. I think it’ll turn out well.

85K90 Writing Challenge

Yeah, about this… we’re supposed to be in the 45,000 range and I have just about 10,000 words. I mean, I still have the month of April, which is also a Camp NaNoWriMo month so I’ll be writing 50,000 words anyway. I’ll catch up no problem. What was hard about this so far is that the majority of my projects are already in the editing stages so I didn’t need to “write” anything. But I’m trying to keep up with it as best as I can. I’m rewriting a couple of stories for Sunday Morning and also rewriting George Florence and the Perfect Alibi, so I’ve been counting those words.

Camp NaNoWriMo

I have this all planned out already (even though I haven’t put it on the website yet). I’ll be writing my Wattpad novella while continuing to rewrite George Florence and the Perfect Alibi. For the last two days, I’m going to prep my next project after Sunday Morning to prepare for the 85K90 Writing Challenge’s editing months while begin in May. But of course, more on that later.

I’m In Good Shape

While I should have had Sunday Morning published a while ago, I think I’m in good shape at this point. Slow and steady wins the race and I’m looking forward to the next couple of months. I’ll stick to these calendars and come May, I’ll make a calendar for the next few months.

2019 Writing Schedule

Normally I spend December prepping for the next year. I get a work schedule in place, I go through my books and writing, and I figure out what I want to accomplish for the following year. Technically, I did do most of that. It’s just that I’ve had a couple of realizations within this past month and I’ve decided to change some things. Well, not change things per-say, but I’ve decided to do some things differently – change some habits and be more open and less stressed. (Which, I guess, is changing things…)

I’m sure you all know at this point that I’ve been participating in the 85K90 Writing Challenge. January is a month of writing though I’ve been using this month to outline and prep. So, if you take a look at my progress tracker on the page, then you’ll see that I’m extremely behind. I’m not behind at all though, I’m just figuring things out. The nice thing about this challenge is that you have three months to write 85k words, but you also have April as a buffer in case you get behind. (April is also Camp NaNo where I’ll be writing 50k words regardless, so I think I’ll reach 85k by the end of April in no problem.)

The other day, the kids I babysit had a lot of homework. They were both sick the previous week so they had a lot of make-up work on top of their regular homework. It took them about an hour to an hour and a half to get their home done each day all week. So, I let them have a little extra iPad time throughout the week because they worked so hard and they were exhausted.

Thus, my brainstorming session.

I made a chart in my Brain Dump notebook for the entire year following the schedule of the 85K90 Writing Challenge. January, February, and March are writing months. May and June are editing months. August and September are prep for publishing months. October and November are publishing months. April, July, and December are finish months, which can be used to finish whatever you didn’t yet or they can be break months. Then there’s also Camp NaNoWriMo and NaNoWriMo in April, July, and November. Two happen to follow on break months and the other happens on a publishing month, which will most likely continue to be prep for me.

I knew I needed to prioritize my writing and figure out what projects I wanted to get done this year. I needed to look at which stage each project is already on and line them up with the appropriate months.

In 2019, I’ll be working on six to seven books. It seems like a lot, but honestly – I’m including Sunday Morning, which will be published soon. I’m also including two novellas. Yes, I’m going back on Wattpad. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on there and I have a couple ideas for some short works. I definitely need to update my profile and such, but I’m planning on publishing two more novellas on there this year.

In addition, I’ll be working on George Florence & The Perfect Alibi, volume two of Sunday Morning, another project I’m not ready to announce yet, and… whatever I decide to write during NaNoWriMo in November. At least I have some time with that! Who knows though, I might use that month as a “rewrite” month for certain projects.

I’ve prioritized my projects and broken them up into the outlining, writing, and editing stages. I’ve designated each month of the year to work on two or three of these projects. As long as I stay focused and everything goes according to plan, I’ll have a few books completed by the end of the year. I’m looking forward to it.

Take Over Is Live! [Wattpad]

Happy Monday!

After a busy April of Camp NaNo, blogging, and other projects, I’ve finally published my latest story on Wattpad.

It’s called Take Over and is YA general fiction. It’s not the kind of story I’d typically write, but I had originally written this story for NaNo a few years ago. Like, a long time ago. I can’t even remember.

I liked the idea though and wanted to see it through. I couldn’t see it being published, but I think Wattpad is a good fit for it.

Here’s what the story is about:

Senior year of high school is all about living it up and making the most of your final year before stepping into the real world. For Roxie Smith, she just wants to get through the school year. She doesn’t mind quietly doing her homework and begin prep for college. High school hasn’t been her favorite fun time and she can’t wait for summer to roll around again.

For her friends and Brad, her boyfriend, however, they really want to leave the school with a bang. They want to be a legendary senior class and they want to go down in history for all the classes after them.

Brad comes up with an elaborate plan to take over the school and teachers disguised as the annual senior prank. Roxie knows it’s a bad idea. She knows it’ll get out of hand. Her friends shun her when she decides to take no part in the take over. None of the teachers believe her when she tries to warn them and she has the whole school against her.

Some say senior year is the best. For Roxie, it’s going to be a long one.

I hope it sounds appealing to you and that you’ll give it a try. This has been long in the making and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

THE SCRIBE Is Now Live On Wattpad!

Guess what? I’m finally using my Wattpad account!

I’ve been working on a novella specifically for Wattpad for a few months now. It’s been through a lot including three name changes. Some of you might know the story as “Special,” others as “The Librarian,” and now it’s finally “The Scribe.”

This novella originally started as a special Short Story Sunday. It ran through the month of August, each part being posted on Sunday and ending with a poll. My readers chose what they wanted to happen next in the story. You can read the original story HERE. Through that, it sparked some new ideas for me.

I decided to expand upon the story in November during NaNoWriMo. The story ended around 50,000 words, which was fine for me because I wanted it to be a novella.

After editing for a long time (and I mean a long time), I got the story to around 17-18,000 words. It’s a fantasy with Greek mythology roots. Here’s what it’s about:

“When one Scribe becomes three, three Fates will become one.”

Sadie Powers is an average college student. She has a couple of good friends and a boyfriend and has straight As in her classes. So, why does her science professor want to see her in the library late one night?

Professor Hobbs, well known by the students as “Crazy Hobbs,” gives Sadie a notebook. He claims it contains special paper. He wants her to keep it a secret and to use it wisely. He knows she will do great things with the notebook.

Believing him to be crazy, Sadie heeds his words with a grain of salt. But when he shows her the Room of Destiny hidden within the school’s library, Professor Hobbs explains Sadie is the next Scribe. She is to keep order and balance within the seven billion people residing on Earth.

The Scribe’s job is supposed to fix any unjust or premature deaths using her notebook and powerful quill. How is she supposed to tempt with Fate? Because, as far as Sadie knows, magic doesn’t exist… Does it?

So, I’m proud to say The Scribe is finally published on Wattpad! I’ll be uploading one chapter every day until the story ends. I do hope you give it a read. I’ve worked hard and I’m happy with how it turned out. I hope you are too.

Using The Rainbow Editing Method [Editing]

We all know that I’m not the best at self-editing. I’ve gotten better over the years, but I tend to end up proofreading rather than editing. I know what I want to fix but can’t figure out how to fix it. So I skip it to “deal with it later.” And that’s not good for any writer and their novel.

I’ve decided to give myself a good kick and really make 2018 count. No more “prep” for this or that and then never following through. I like to think I’m a hard worker, but I’m pretty slow. I think I’m ready at this point to finally do something about my writing and I think it shows in my editing.

A few months ago I talked about Rainbow Editing your manuscript. It’s all about using various colors for different parts of your novel. For example, I use the colors in the following way:

Red – Typos, spelling, grammar
Orange – Dialogue, description, pacing, tenses, etc.
Green – Plot changes
Blue – Character development
Purple – Research and fact-checking
Pink – Overall structure, vocabulary/word replacement, etc.

I started using this method to edit The Scribe this month and I can’t express how impressed I am that it’s working for me.

Instead of losing steam after 10 pages, I edited over 60 in one sitting. Which, admittedly, is a big deal for me. My manuscript is marked up with mostly orange, green, and blue with a little red, purple, and pink sprinkled in. I’m cutting probably about 75% of the story, so the majority of the pages are filled with a giant green X.

I think this method helps me focus on one thing at a time rather than looking at the whole picture and getting overwhelmed. And no, I don’t go through a chapter six times in a row for each individual color, I look at each page, each paragraph, and think to myself, “what’s not working here?”

After I mark up a paragraph or a few with green and/or orange, I look back at it making sure the character development makes sense, that the paragraph should be in that spot, etc.

It’s hard to explain, but it actually works and I have to say I’m impressed.

It’s a slow process, but it definitely helps. The pages of my manuscript are so colorful and maybe I just get easily distracted by pretty things that it’s holding my attention more: “How much color can I splash on this page?”

In all seriousness, I have to rewrite more than half of this story, which I’m in the process of. So… it’s going.

I still have about two weeks to finish the rewrite and give it another good edit. I still plan on publishing the story onto Wattpad in January. So, wish me luck!

An Hour A Day

If you know anything about me, you know that I work on one writing project after another. I alternate working on multiple projects at once. I get a lot done on these projects. But when it comes to editing, it’s a slow-going process. Sometimes it’s non-existant.

My plan was to have my mystery novel 100% edited by the end of this year and start querying it in January. I did really well working on it at the beginning of the year and then somewhere I got lost along the way. Or my novel got lost. I don’t really know.

Needless to say, I’m taking a break with that one. I hate to say it, but I really need to re-evaluate my plan to tackle that novel. There’s a lot more to figure out than just “editing” it as far as research and deeper plot holes go.

Writing mysteries are hard. I love it, it’s fun, but there’s so much information to remember and to figure out when writing each mystery. And since my novel is the first in a series, I feel the need to figure out the rest of the books before I can fully understand the first mystery. It’s a little hard to explain, you’ll just have to trust me on that one.

So maybe that novel will be ready by December 2017. Because I’ve decided that George and Lilah need a vacation. So I’m not going to look at my manuscript until January 2017. If inspiration happens to strike, then I will most definitely put that to good use, but for right now I’m going to take a step back and then look at it again as though I’m editing the first draft in January.

I know I said I was going to have my sister look at it, but I’m not even going to do that just yet. Maybe next summer.

So, the point of this whole post (now that we’re over 300 words into the article) is that Kris and I had one of our quarter-life-crisis-things when it comes to our writing.

I try to make deadlines for myself and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. In the end, I know the deadline is “fake” because it was set up by me and I have no one to answer to, except me.

But the reason I do so well with NaNoWriMo is because the deadline is “real.” I have to give my manuscript to someone by the end of the month. That someone being the NaNo validator, but still, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Plus, NaNo is kind of like a competition. And who doesn’t like a fun competition?

So Kris and I decided to commit to one novel each. We both have a novel that’s mostly written, but the first draft isn’t quite finished.

For me, it’s The Lost Girl. I wrote 58,000 words of the novel back in April for Camp NaNoWriMo, but the actual story wasn’t complete.

I know I wrote a post a while ago saying my plans were to finish the novel, edit it in the summer, and then post it on Wattpad in November or December. Well, this may come as a shock to you, but I haven’t touched that story since the end of April.

I was focused more on why George and I couldn’t get along and then when I finally threw in the towel for that one, I decided to work on short stories.

Anyway, Kris and I are going to hold each other accountable for our novels. She committed to her fantasy novel and I committed to The Lost Girl. We’re going to work on our manuscripts for at least one hour each day and finish our first drafts by October 1st. Including today, that gives us 32 days, 32 (or more) hours to finish these drafts.

Then, on October 1st, we’re going to write each other letters about our manuscripts, things that we think need work, what we need to edit or research, the works. Then we’ll swap manuscripts and the other will read and critique it. We’ll set a deadline for that and then we’ll go from there.

It’s still a deadline set up by me, but I have someone to answer to other than myself. My manuscript will be leaving my hands in a month even if it’s just going on the desk across from mine.

I think this will work.

The Lost Girl Cover

Pretty much since I started writing I always wanted to create my own covers for my novels. I never knew how–what programs to use, how to get the pictures legally, etc. So I never bothered… Or I would, but I just wouldn’t show it to the rest of the world.

Yet, whenever I can, I try to take pictures of nature or other things that strike me at the time. I tend to use the camera on my phone, which takes great pictures. However, when I learn to use my real camera then I’ll start bringing that with me to places.

I recently got Photoshop and while I took a class on it in high school, it’s an updated version… and I probably still wouldn’t remember how to use it even if it was the same version.

But I did my best and creating graphics can only get better with practice.

So, lo and behold, here is the cover to my Camp NaNoWriMo novel, The Lost Girl.

It’s simple as I have to work with what I have and what I know. Though I think it came out pretty well, if I do say so myself.

The background was taken from the backyard of the family I babysit for. I took the picture myself with my phone.

I had other ideas for the cover, but as I don’t have a model to act as the protagonist for the cover, I decided to go easy and simple.

Sometimes I think simpler can be better.

I hope this cover does the novel justice!

I would like to say, “It’s not like I’m going to publish this or anything,” but I do plan on putting this story on Wattpad when it’s edited (hopefully by the end of 2016 or very early 2017).

I made a Wattpad account a while ago hoping to get more of my original work out there other than just quick Short Story Sundays. I still haven’t posted anything on there, but I think The Lost Girl will be the first one.

I don’t really think The Lost Girl will be publishable by a traditional publisher and I don’t have the desire to attempt to self-publish it. So I think Wattpad would be a great fit. It would be like the next step up from my blog. Of course, I’ll still continue to give updates on here and let you all know when the next chapter is up.

But that won’t be for a while, so don’t worry about it.
