Exciting Updates! (Not Really)

Today is day three of February vacation. For the past two days I’ve spent it doing nothing, cleaning the house, and getting little bits of writing done here and there. I am proud to say that I actually did something today!

As Kris stated, “We’ve gotten our social quota for the year… we’re done!”

Last night, my sister Lisa and her husband texted me asking if we wanted to meet them for lunch. So, we did. They were a little late due to the DMV, but it was all good.

Kris and I went to Barnes & Noble in the morning. It’s always nice to have the opportunity to go there multiple times a week. We always go on Saturdays because Sundays we have church and I’m at work the rest of the week. We both brought just our notebooks again. It’s been a nice change of pace handwriting instead of typing, even if typing is faster. However, I wrote over 1,000 words today in about an hour. I think that’s a pretty good accomplishment.

What am I writing? I have no idea… it was an idea I got from a short story I wrote back in November. I have no idea where it’s going or why I decided to continue with it. However, a plot is slowly forming in my head so I’m going to stick with it for now. Maybe it’ll turn into a new novel idea or maybe it’ll turn into a more lengthy short story that I can submit to a contest or something. We’ll see.

Then we went to Kohl’s because we both need new clothes… and we needed to kill some more time while we waited for our sister and brother.

Then we went to the mall (which was where we were meeting them for lunch) and we wandered around aimlessly there. After about two hours, we ate lunch and sat there and talked for about an hour and a half or so. Then we finally parted ways.

After eight hours, Kris and I staggered home and boy, has it been a long day! It’s been a good day, though. We saw some family, wrote a bit, and got new clothes.

You can’t go wrong with that.

A Day Of Nothing

I called out of work again today. I was giving myself another chance to get my appetite back. I’m still not 100%, but it looks like I will be going to back to work tomorrow; especially since I was capable of walking around today.

However, even though I had the day off, I figured I should continue resting. Then again, because I was able to wander around without getting too dizzy I wanted to do stuff.

I didn’t get anything done. Resting won.

Kris pet sits for my uncle’s dog, Cookie, three days a week and today was one of those days. As you can see below, Cookie and I were content cuddling on the couch… when she wasn’t running around like a mad man, I mean.

Since I was in a decent state of mind and Kris and I put eight computer players duking it out on Super Smash Brothers Wii U for background noise (in other words, we were doing nothing), I got to thinking. I thought about everything I did not get to do this past weekend because I was dead to the world.

1. Query Nature According to Bobby — I was going to do one final look over for my childrens book manuscript and then send it out to a few agents this past weekend. Since the start of 2015, I’ve been slowing gathering agents’ information with the help of the Writers Market. This was going to be my weekend to officially get Bobby on his way, but… that’s going to have to wait until next weekend.

2. Shopping spree — I’m little. I’m short, skinny, petite, whatever you want to call it. I stopped growing a long time ago and because of that I have the same clothes I wore in high school (I’m pretty sure two of my sweaters are from middle school). I don’t particularly mind this because the clothes I wear are nice and comfortable. Plus, I can’t wear anything too fancy because I spend most of my time at work… I work with preschoolers. Enough said.

However, as nice as my clothes are, it would be nice to get some new ones for a change. I found a gift card that was a class gift from the parents at my old preschool. I’ve had it for over a year and still haven’t used it. It has a good amount of money on it, so I thought it would be nice to go through my clothes, donate some, throw away others, and then go shopping.

3. Clean — My bedroom, my office, and the bathroom need to be clean. They need a good dusting and vacuuming. Plus, I want to organize my video games, music, and movies. Also, we just got two new cabinets for the bathroom so I need to organize all that stuff because right now everything is currently sitting on my dresser.

4. Barnes & Noble — I can’t stress this enough. I didn’t get to go to Barnes & Noble this week. That’s what I look forward to every week. Sure, there’s next week… but it’s the principle. Also, I needed to go to Staples. I need more red pens. I have one red pen and it’s running out of ink from editing Detective Florence 2. I have many black and blue pens. Heck, I’m pretty sure I have pink, purple, gold, whatever, but I like red pens for editing. It just makes it more “official” to me. You agree with me, right? Say yes.

I think that’s all I had planned for the weekend. I know it seems like a lot and I didn’t expect to get through all of that over the weekend, but it would have been nice to get a few of those things done.

It is what it is. Tomorrow’s a new day and I’m feeling better. So I’ll start fresh after work tomorrow. Plus, this weekend is a long weekend thanks to Martin Luther King, Jr. So I’ll have Monday as an extra day.

I guess everything does tend to work out in the end, doesn’t it?

Happy December!

Where Did The Year Go…

NaNo Winner 3

Well, it’s December first. I can’t remember anything that happened this year and we still have a month to go. Needless to say, November was a busy month, but it’s all a blur to me now. The first 17 days of November I wrote…a lot. And I won NaNoWriMo. I had planned on going above and beyond the 50k mark because I wanted to finish the entire manuscript. However, I think I got a little too tired from all that writing before. I hit about 52k and then stopped. But I got a nifty certificate to go with my Camp NaNo ones!

The best part is that Kris won NaNo, too. This was her very first year winning and last night she got home from working 8:30-5:30 and wrote about 5,000 words in order to hit the 50k. She finished around 10:30 at night, but she made it just in time! She and I are going Christmas shopping today. If we find anything we want, we may treat ourselves for winning.

In other news, I started a new project. Yeah, I know…I have too many writing projects going on at once. But I figured that for the month of December I can go back and forth between that one and Detective Florence. I’m hoping that I will be able to finish that novel by the end of the month so for my New Year’s resolution I can say I want it to be completely edited by the end of 2014. Heh, we’ll see what happens.

Anyway, this new project is a collection of silly poems for kids. Random? Totally. Friday night Kris was writing her NaNo novel and I didn’t feel like writing mine. I was in a bit of a hyped up mood and ended up writing a poem about a fat dog named Sit. I would post it to give you guys a sneak peek, but I submitted it to Chicken Soup. They have a new book coming out called “The Dog Did WHAT?”

Now I’m sure most of you have heard of Chicken Soup for the Soul. Most of you probably have a few of their books. The stories and poems submitted are non-fiction, heart-felt, inspirational. Some make you laugh, some make you cry. Kris thought this poem was so adorable that she begged me to submit it. I don’t think it will get published as it’s obvious that it’s a silly fictional poem. But like Kris said, “The worst they can do is say no.” So I sent it in anyway, but I highly doubt it will get published.

The deadline for entries for this particular book is January 5, 2014. So it’s going to be a while before I hear back (if I hear back at all…I don’t think they contact you if it’s a rejection). So I will post it eventually. But I’m also shooting to make a whole book of these poems and maybe get that published someday. I have four poems so far. Go me!

So I was going to post an excerpt of Detective Florence today, but since I never finished the full manuscript, I’m going to wait. When I finish the novel (hopefully by the end of the month) I’ll post an excerpt of it.

Congrats to all those who won NaNoWriMo this year! 🙂

Wait, It’s December…?

Well, I Tried…

NaNo is over. It’s been over for four days and while I realized that it was December, I guess it never sunk in that NaNo was actually over for yet another year. I have come to a conclusion, though. NaNo is my BFF. Yes. Big, fat fail.

I never wrote all those words that I said I was going to write. Even when it got to be only three or four days left, I only wrote an extra 1000 words. I never even broke 30K, even though I was pretty close. However, I did break 25K, which is half. So I guess that’s a good thing.

So my profile on the NaNo website is now going to say I won 2009 and participated in 2012, 2011, and 2012. I was so hoping for another win, but I’m not going to complain. I made it half way at least. Not to mention that I got a good portion of the novel done. The characters are being good (so far), the plot is moving along nicely (so far), and I think it’ll be quite easy to finish (yeah right). I just need to get the motivation to do it.

NaNo and I had a good run this year. I started off doing great, but too much life got in the way. Just because I didn’t get a “win” out of it, doesn’t mean that I didn’t get a good novel out of it…even if it’s no finished. But it will be finished. Maybe when I’m 50. But it will be finished eventually.

I have been thinking a lot about my writing lately on account that I did fail NaNo. I really thought that I was going to win again this year and I really thought that I was going to actually finish the whole novel. But since I didn’t make it to either of those goals, I decided that I’m going to do my very best to write in the months to come.

I have the rest of this week, all next week, and then three more days (finals) of school. My Christmas shopping is already done and wrapped, so once school is out I’ll have all Winter break to type away. My only concern is that I have to study for my MTEL test, which I am taking in January. Oh, and learn how to drive. That’s kind of important. But when it comes to writing, I think I should be good.

For the Spring semester at school I need to come in five days a week, but it’s only three classes. I’ve had all three of these professors before. I know that I’m going to have virtually no homework. So I’m hoping that next semester will be a good semester for writing. It’s just that I’ll probably pick up a few extra hours at work.

Speaking of writing though, I was exploring my blog because I basically just update posts and nothing else on it…so I was looking around and I noticed on the Challenges page there is something that says I was going to write 360 pages by the end of this year. When I made that goal for myself I was in the middle of writing…well, whatever novel it was, and had hoped that 360 pages would have been the whole novel plus some from another novel. I completely forgot about this goal, so I changed it a bit. Basically, it just means that I have to write 360 pages total. Of any novel. So I added my Saving Each Other pages to that count. I am now up to 109 pages. This means that I have to write 251 more pages by the end of this year.

I have 27 days to do this, which should be about 9 or 10 pages a day. I can do that no problem if it’s double-spaced. I don’t know if I’ll actually do that, but I did say that I was going to try to write as much as I can during this Winter Break. Anything I write will go straight towards that page count. Honestly, I can’t even remember why I made that goal in the first place, but I’m going to stick with it. Why not?

I have a huge list of ideas that are swirling around in my head, but I’m going to try my best to finish Saving Each Other first. Then I can freak out about what to edit as the pile is going to keep building up. Right now I have two novels that need to be seriously edited so I can publish them and now I’m just going to be adding on an extra novel.

Hm. This should be interesting.
