Apps For Writers (Part One)

I got an iPad for graduating with my Bachelors degree!

This is something I’ve wanted for a while, but never got because it costs a lot of money and I was too cheap to buy one myself. So my parents were wonderful enough to buy me one for graduating.

The main reason I wanted an iPad was so I could use it for my writing. I know there are plenty of apps geared towards writers; some good, some not so good.

I decided to go through the app store and try a few different ones and share them here with you guys.

A Novel Idea1. A Novel Idea

This app is a wonderful way to keep track of notes and essentially help outline your novel.

There’s a novel section where you can plug in the title, setting, theme, tone, POV, premise, and plot. A scene section where you can add the time, location, description, tension, and more. There’s also a location section to talk about different settings in the book.

The character section is great because it’s like a profile for your characters. You can plug in their name, role in the novel, age, species, race, gender, physical appearances, personality traits, etc.

The last section is called ideas, where you can keep notes of your novels. I use the idea section as a “case book.” I keep track of all of George’s notes from George Florence and write the notes in his point of view keeping track of witness’ statements, evidence, etc. It helps me get through my mystery novel easier.

Total Recall2. Total Recall

This app is a web map. You can use it just about anything; writing related or not. The reason I put it on this list is because I plan on using it for world building.

The middle bubble will be the name of the world or country and will branch into states and cities and the like.

You can even use it to map out characters, too. The character name in the middle bubble and branch out into personality traits, physical traits, etc.

I have yet to try it out, but I’m sure it will make a great mind map for world building–or anything else–to give you a good sense of your novel.

Name Dice3. Name Dice

The name speaks for itself. You tap the screen and a pair of dice rolls. The first die is a first name the second die is a last name.

I have a list of last names and have a baby name book, but this app is great when you’re in a pinch and don’t feel like doing a lot of thinking. If you need a name for a quick side character, this app does the work for you.

The only thing is you never know if you’re going to get a male or female name. It would be cool if they updated the app so there was the option: “male, female, or surprise me.”

So if you’re seeking a specific gender, it might take a few rolls, but it’s quick and easy so it’s not too much of a problem.

Writer Lists4. Writer Lists

I cannot express how amazing this app is!

Brought to you by the people who created Name Dice, Writer Lists is what the name states: lists for writers.

I love lists. I love making lists. It helps me stay organized and it relaxes me. I make to-do lists every day and I sometimes make lists of something random just for the sake of making a list.

I can’t count how many lists there are on this app, but it’s more than enough. There are categories and sub-categories for the lists.

Categories include: character naming, character physical characteristics, character occupations, character milestones, personality thoughts, personality behaviors, plot, setting geographical, setting countries by continent, setting other, genres, miscellaneous, words grammar, and words fun.

So the categories are novel-based as well as mechanics for the story and some fun stuff mixed in.

The sub-categories go more in depth of the categories; for example, the lists for character naming include male first names, female first names, last names, people/roles, and nonhuman characters.

The app isn’t free, but definitely worth having.

Those are all the apps I’ve explored for right now. There are a few other apps that I would like to explore. So there will be another post like this with more apps to look into. Hopefully you guys liked this enough to want me to make another part to this. I don’t know when the next part will be posted, but you can expect another part in the future.

I hope you guys enjoy those apps I recommended! Also, if you have any other apps you would like to recommend to me, I’d be more than happy to check it out.

I Got Nothing Done Today…

Well, I have been on a roll writing for at least one hour every day. However, I didn’t write at all today. But I did say that I was going to try to post on here every day, so here I am. I have no news, but I am posting!

The reason as to why I didn’t write today was because I was busy with my websites. For example, Stars Vs. Gems, Gaia Ranch, and Spilled Ink. Spilled Ink is a writing website that my sister and I are working on together. We already have one up right now, but we completely re-did the whole website. So that’s why I didn’t give you the link because it’s not open yet. However, we  are planning on opening it on Columbus Day…maybe sooner. I’ll explain more about the website when it opens.

Once I finished working on our websites for the day, I thought about getting some writing done, but when I looked at the time I realized that I wasn’t going to have enough time. Although, now that I think about it, I could have written a little bit. Getting a little something done is better than nothing. But oh, well. What’s done is done.

I had a very busy day today because of church. Everyone knows that I’m the co-director of the Sunday school, correct? Well, today the Bishop came for a visit. Plus the Sunday school were performing something in the middle of the service. Also, we had a luncheon for the ladies who run the Thrift Shop to say thank you for everything they do for the church. Usually, I’m at church from 9:30 to 12:00. Today, because of the Bishop’s schedule, the service was 2 to 3. But because of the thing the Sunday School did in the service, we needed to practice it. So we told everyone to come at one, which meant that I was there before one. Then after the service, we had the luncheon and, well…I was at church today from 12:45 to 6:00. It wasn’t a bad time, but I just didn’t want to be there for that amount of time as well as it being smack in the middle of the day.

Anyway, when I got home, I was starving (there wasn’t any food I liked at the luncheon) so my sister and I got Panera and we’ve been watching TV ever since. I’ve been too tired to do anything else. Although, I think I might go plan out the novel a little bit.

The Blank Page has three novels in it and I thought that I should plan those out. Not fully, but just enough so that when I have my characters writing them, they all make sense. So I may do that, but as far as actual writing goes…I’m not going to be boosting my word count tonight.

Speaking of planning out the novels, though, I found this really cool app on my iPod. It’s called “A Novel Idea.” It breaks everything down. You can click on “novels” and will ask you the title, setting, theme, tone, POV, premise, plot, and group. The group is something you make up. You can group certain things together. For example, when I plugged in The Blank Page, I put it under the Writers Group group. The other sections are “scenes,” “characters,” “locations,” and “ideas.” It’s very detailed and organized. I added The Blank Page as a novel and added Dominic, Justin, and Adair as characters. Then it allowed me to attach the novel to each character. It also allowed me to give Dominic, Adair, and Justin relations to each other. It really keeps you organized. I think I may use this to plan out the three novels that aren’t real. Then I might know enough information about them so Dominic, Justin, and Adair can write them efficiently in The Blank Page.

If you like to write and have an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or anything along those lines, then you should download this app. It’s really useful and it was free. I highly recommend it.

Wait, How Long Has It Been?

I’m baaack…

Wow. It has been well over two months since I was last on here. And I’m not coming back at a good time, either…yes, I am going on vacation next week. When I first started this blog, I had a goal in my mind that I was going to update this thing at least once a week. Well, I guess I had a good run at first.

The thing is, I just haven’t had the time. I took summer courses at school, which didn’t end until the end of July. So, needless to say, I did not beat Camp NaNo in June. I was too busy with homework. On top of that, the preschool I work at did not have a summer program this year so I have been out of a job the past couple of months…I have been babysitting like crazy. Speaking of NaNo, though…this month is another Camp, correct? Well, I’m not doing that, either. Sad, I know. I was away for my boyfriend’s birthday from August 4th to the 9th. So this is the first full week of August I have been home. I’m leaving again on Sunday for (drum roll…) DISNEY! Then shortly after that I have my MTEL test and then it’s back to work and school.

So that’s what I have been doing this summer. School, babysitting, studying for MTEL, trying to get teacher certified, learning how to drive, and preparing for the upcoming school semester while organizing my room and preparing for vacation. Notice anything missing from that? Huh? What is this “writing” you speak of? Oh, that…yes, I remember that. That’s right–I have not written a single word since June NaNo…June 6th, to be exact, which is worse because I didn’t even make it to the middle of the month.

So, I have a plan…that may or may not work, but I’m hoping that it works. The plan involves more writing. To put it simply, I am planning on writing at least an hour every day. However, it may be difficult because of my busy schedule this semester, but I’m going to try it out. I’ll go more into that when the time gets closer…if you’re interested. Then again, you read this far, so I am going to assume that you’re interested. Or maybe you’re bored. Either way, thanks for reading!

I am going to get back into posting on here…once a week at the least. But I may update a little more to catch up on everything since the last time I posted.

Right now, I’m focusing on getting ready for Disney. I’m leaving early Sunday morning (August 19) and coming home on Monday (August 27). I’m going down there with my two older sisters, my aunt, my aunt’s mom, my uncle, and my three cousins. Is was my and my sisters’ Christmas present from my parents last year. We’re tagging along with our cousins because they know what they’re doing and we don’t. We’re driving down there and driving back, so that is going to be very interesting. I would rather drive than take an airplane, though.

I’m hoping to get some writing done while I’m down there, too. Maybe I can write a little in the car or right before we go to bed. I would like to update this here and there as well. I will have wi-fi in the hotel, but I have no iPod or a fancy phone. I’m on the iPad now, but this belongs to my mother, so I don’t know if she would want me to bring this down there…so the only device I could use would be my Nintendo 3DS, but I somehow get the feeling that would be difficult to update something like this…

Anyway, I’m slowly trying to get my act back together from the summer. So I’m sure that things will get better when school starts…hopefully. I’ll keep you updated.
