Reality Checks In

20140827_081639

Yesterday we arrived home around 1:30 in the afternoon. It was good timing. But, when I say “home” I mean my cousins’ house. Kris and I waited there for two hours for our uncle to pick us home on his way home from work to bring us home. After traffic we didn’t get back to our own home until about 4:30. It was a long day and I was tired, needless to say.

When we walked into the house we were greeted warmly by our mother and father and our dog Chip was ecstatic. Hunter pretended he didn’t care, but he kept going through our luggage and meowing at us. He’s been following me around this morning. Raph came right out of her box house when she saw me, which made me feel good. Mikey… well, he’s a fish. He came to the front of his tank, but he was most likely just swimming or looking for food.

After discussing the trip with my parents and showing them photos and souvenirs we bought them, I sat on the couch for a few hours before turning in early. I slept well, but I had to get up early this morning because I have to babysit soon. Why I agreed to babysit the day after my Disney vacation is beyond me. Kris was smart and took today off from work pretending she was just getting home today. I should have done that.

So I woke up at about 7:30 this morning. I rolled out of bed trying not to squish Chip in the process and then proceeded to make a small tent with my blankets. When Chip has the bed to herself, she likes to be under the covers. So, when I have to ditch her in the morning I try to make her a fort of some kind. Sometimes she stays, sometimes she doesn’t. It’s been over an hour now and she’s still sleeping under there.

I went down to the kitchen, made myself a cup of coffee, took out a pea from the freezer to feed Mikey (he got sick a few weeks ago so I have to feed him peas now), went into my office, opened the blinds and one of the windows, turned on my computer, fed Mikey, woke Raph up and took her out of her tank, and then I sat down at my computer to blog, surf the web, sip at my coffee, etc.

While waiting for my computer to finish loading, I felt as though I had never left. The routine I just described is the same thing I do every single morning. It’s going to continue to be that way because work starts in a week and a half. The only difference will be that I’ll be waking up about an hour earlier to do it all.

School starts a week from today, work starts a week from Monday, and Sunday school starts on a Sunday in September (I’m the director now and I have no idea when the first day is going to be… great, huh?). Not to mention I have to babysit today, tomorrow, and Friday. My cousins start back to school a week from Thursday and I have to get them ready because I have to drive one of them on my way to work. I also have to find time to write in all of this, as well.

I write better in the morning, but I have to be at work by eight. I have to drive my cousin to school which means I have to leave a little earlier than usual. If I want to write in the morning then I’m going to have to wake up at four in which case I would have to go to bed at about seven or eight. I’ll probably end up writing at night or in the afternoon after work, but then I’ll be tired from the day and then when am I going to get my homework done?

Listen to me ramble on. It truly is like I never left. I’m immediately back to my old routine that has never changed and I’m back to my old ways of thinking… or worrying.

One thing I failed to mention was the fact that I’m sipping my coffee out of the brand new mug I bought myself in Disney. It has the picture of Peter Pan on it and it says “Never grow up.” This reminds me that I did in fact go on vacation and that it wasn’t just a dream. I did get my break from reality, even though it doesn’t seem like it. My break lasted 11 days (granted four were spent in the car…) and through that my biggest and only concern was that I wanted to meet Peter Pan. And I did.

So, yes I do have a lot on my plate. I have a lot to think about and to worry about (even though I worry over nothing most of the time). The summer will be officially over sooner rather than later. It’s sad, but it was the same amount of time I get every summer. It just went by too fast, which is always how it goes.

I turn 21 in less than a week, so unfortunately for Peter Pan (and myself), I’m growing up. I never wanted to grow up (and I still don’t), but age is but a number and considering the fact that I cried after I met Peter Pan, I’m going to say I’m still a kid at heart and that is one thing I hope will never change.

I hate homework, but I’m excited for my classes this upcoming semester. Depending on the professors, I should have a good experience with school this time around. I’m starting a new job in a place I love surrounded by awesome people. While the kids can drive me nuts, they’re great as well and I enjoy their company. Directing the Sunday school will be a challenge, but it’s something I always wanted to do ever since I myself was in Sunday school. I may not be ready, but I’m willing to get through it. I’ll be writing every moment I can now that I told myself what I wanted to accomplish with my writing for the next few months.

So, I guess if it’s something you love and you want it, growing up isn’t all that bad. But, as I stated earlier, my mentality is growing up, but not my heart. I guess you really can have the best of both worlds.

Going Home

image

Today l’m leaving this beautiful place. I was lucky to stay seven full days this time whereas last time we only stayed five full days. Yet, l still feel as though we didn’t have nearly enough time.

I filled up my autograph book. There were still a few characters l wanted to see, but we saw and met a lot; a lot more than our last visit to Disney. Plus we got all the princesses (except Pocahontas). So, in that sense l guess there’s not much else to do.

I bought a lot of stuff for myself. I got a mug and a tumbler cup. The mug is of course Peter Pan and the tumbler is Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney together which is really cute.

Other than that l got a pack of three Tinkerbell notebooks and four novels. Yep. Books, notebooks, and cups. My three favorite things.

I have to hop in the car soon. I’ll be home tomorrow afternoon. Then l have to babysit for the rest of the week, school starts next week, work starts the week after that, and sunday school will start up again one of those sundays.

Back to reality.

My Hero

Today was an emotional day. I met Peter Pan.

I stood there staring and smiling at him like Dopey from Snow White. I was shaking and he pointed it out to me.

I was so star struck that l barely even spoke to him. I said one thing: he asked if he could draw on my face and l said, “go for it” because l was too amazed l was standing next to him.

After he signed my book and we took pictures, l bawled my eyes out. From excitement of course, but it was totally embarrassing.

Two years ago l went to Disney and never met him. I was disappointed, but we couldn’t find him. To say the least l was ecstatic this time. Kris and l practically stalked him to make sure we could meet him.

For being in Disney, l really did have a wish come true.

(Also, a very happy birthday to the wonderful Herminia! I think l just figured out what the 22 in her name means. ;-))

The Writer’s Stop

image

Hey everyone!

My vacation has been a blast so far. We left Saturday morning and arrived at the hotel Sunday afternoon. We didn’t do too much on Sunday as we were all exhausted from the long car ride. Monday was when we really got the party started.

We woke up bright and early Monday morning to go to breakfast and we spent the day at Magic Kingdom and the evening at Epcot where we watched a water show with fireworks.

Tuesday we spent the entire day at Magic Kingdom. 7:30 in the morning until about 5:30 in the evening. Kris and l went back to our hotel and stayed there due to exhaustion.

Today we went to Hollywood Studios and went on Toy Story Mania (which is the best ride in the universe). We also went to the Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post from Frozen where we played in snow and ice skated… in 95-degree weather.

Also at Hollywood Studios, Kris and I also found a store called “The Writer’s Stop.” It was a small cafe with Disney merchandise and books. The selection of books weren’t a lot and most of them were Disney-related, but there were a few novels as well. It was an adorable shop.

Kris and l got a couple of books, as you can see from the picture. I got two: Fairest of Them All by Serena Valentino and Once Upon A Time: a collection of classic fairy tales by Kevin Tong. Kris got the first book of the Kingdom Keepers series by Ridley Pearson, Disney After Dark.

We’re back at the hotel now resting because we have a dessert party at Magic Kingdom at 9:30 tonight. So, we’re excited for that.

I may give more details on my vacation when l get home. I just wanted to check in for now. I hope everyone else is having a great week!

Semi-Hiatus

I’m going to Disney today!

Well, l’m going to Disney tomorrow, leaving today. Kris and l are driving down with our cousins, aunt, and uncle. It takes about a day and a half.

I’m leaving soon so l need to keep the post short and sweet, but l’m going to try my best to update this week. It just won’t be about writing… it’ll be about Disney.

Parts two and three of my short challenge will be posted as the next two Short Story Sundays. They’re all ready written and posted as drafts on WordPress. So, provided l have wi-fi and my phone has service in the hotel (which it should) then l’ll be able to post.

I hope to update semi-regularly to share my trip with everyone, but l can’t make any promises. Honestly, l can’t even promise the short stories just in case.

However, if l am able to post, I don’t know how well l’ll be able to keep up with comments. I may reply to them all, just some, or not at all. I’ll catch up on everything when l get back… which will be August 27 (l think).

I hope everyone is doing well has a great week! Wish me luck for the car ride!

Stepping It Up

Writing

Hey everyone!

It’s another one of those posts again…yes, we’re going to discuss “the future” today. Aren’t we excited?

My sister Lisa has a friend who is currently saving up money with her sister to move out of the house. Since she, Kris, and I are all planning Lisa’s bridal shower together and such we’ve had a lot of time to hang out more than usual which is nice. She was telling Kris and I her plans and it got Kris and I thinking…again.

We both love to write. And we do write. But we don’t “write.” I realize I’m not making any sense, but it’s Camp NaNoWriMo right now, people. I was doing so well and then I just stopped. Why? I don’t know…bridal shower and bachelorette planning, homework, work, babysitting, preparing my bedroom to be painted, etc. There is so much to do and not enough time. And unfortunately, with my bills from the upcoming wedding and I’m going to Disney again in August in addition to school bills and such, I need to save every scrap of money I can get. Hence why I’ve been working and babysitting so much.

Writing doesn’t fit in right now. It’s not a priority because it doesn’t pay the bills. It makes me angry because I love to write and want to do it all the time for the rest of my life, but I don’t want to become a full-time writer just so I can go to Disney…I want it as a career because I know I will be happy doing that for the rest of my life.

Thus, Kris and I are bummed; especially Kris because she basically works about nine hours a day in which case your entire day is gone by that point. But by coincidence, the Easter Bunny got Kris a subscription to Writer’s Digest magazine and gave her an issue to get her started.

This issue had a list of 101 best websites for writers. We’re talking about websites to get the creative juices flowing, writing advice, agents and publishing, general resources, jobs, online writing communities, genre-specified sites, and writing sites that are just fun. It’s the best thing we’ve ever come across. Kris and I were discussing freelance writing on the side until we were able to publish something and this list of website gives us links to find writing jobs.

Neither one of us have looked at all the websites thoroughly, so we haven’t decided which are too fantastic to not join and such. Plus, there’s a lot to choose from and honestly a bit overwhelming because you just don’t know where to start.

As I go through these websites, I will be sharing my favorites on here for all of you writerly people to enjoy.

Since Kris and I have been behind on NaNo and decided to finally step it up into our writing careers, we’re skipping church tomorrow to go to Barnes & Noble and write all day long. So I’m hoping to write at least 10k tomorrow.

I decided to write all day today as well since I was home and wrote 10,369 words. I have to say that I feel so good right now after doing that. My NaNo count is up to 30,721 now. Still behind, but hopefully if I get a good chunk done tomorrow I will be able to hit 50k by the end of the month.

Before I go, I have to shamelessly advertise: Kris started a new blog. She’s still maintaining her Sugar Wolf blog about writing, but she created a new blog called Wagging Tales. She works with dogs so this blog is dedicated to stories and her experiences with the furry, loveable creatures. So feel free to go check it out!

I hope everyone is having good luck with their writing  and NaNo (if you’re participating). Talk to you soon! 🙂

Easter and Other Happenings

Hey everyone! I hope we all had a wonderful Easter yesterday. It was a good day and great weather, too! The Easter Bunny brought me an army of Ninja Turtle Beanie Balls which was awesome, a new SD card for my 3DS, and the Kalos Pokedex as well as the Kalos game guide for the X & Y Pokemon games. I also got bark for Raph so I can finally clean her tank. I’m sure she’ll be happy. In addition to that, Kris got the movie Frozen. Best Disney movie ever!

A lot has been going on. One of the preschool teachers has been out for three weeks straight (plus more) so I’ve been working a lot. I also have school…school has been interesting. I just signed up for classes for the Fall semester. I’m taking a class called Selected Authors…guess who the authors are! J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien. I get to read Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings for school. How awesome is that?! It’s pretty awesome, yes.

In addition to work and school, I’ve been busy planning my sister’s bridal shower, which is in August. Plus the bachelorette party, which is in September. Then we have the wedding in October. So that’s been holding my attention a lot. I’ve been babysitting a lot, as well. This week is April vacation so I get a break from work, right? No…stupid me agreed to babysit for four different families and before I realized what I had done, it was too late. I babysat for about four hours today, tomorrow through Friday I have another family for about five hours in the morning. Tuesday night I’m babysitting for a third family and Thursday night I’m babysitting for a fourth family. Wonderful stuff.

I’ve also been slowly trying to clean my bedroom. Kris and I don’t go in there much anymore unless we’re sleeping because now we have our office that used to be Lisa’s room. You guys should have seen all the dust and yuckies in the room. It was terrible. But we’re going to be painting and organizing it soon so it needs to be done. Of course, it should be done regardless, but…whatever. I bought the extended editions of the three Lord of the Rings movies so Kris and I have been pretty busy with those. We’ve been addicted to the series since I had to read The Hobbit for my Science Fiction & Fantasy class.

Well, that’s what’s been going on in my life. I’m sure you all noticed writing was not mentioned at all. Yeah, no. I’ve been failing at my writing recently. I can justify it because I have been really busy (except I guess watching three movies that total to over 12 hours probably doesn’t count as a good excuse), but it doesn’t look like I’ll be winning Camp NaNoWriMo this month.

I started off Camp strong and then I crashed and burned. In between homework and babysitting this week I’m going to really try to kick it into gear, but it’ll be difficult. I’m only at 16,000 or something like that. Kris and I are planning on going to Barnes & Noble on the 27th to write as much as we can though. So can we all keep our fingers crossed for both me and her? That would be much appreciated.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and are writing each and every day unlike me! 🙂

Day 10

23,081/50,000 Words

Huh. It’s been a few days, hasn’t it? Well, the reason I haven’t updated this thing is because I haven’t written anything since my last post, which was Day 6 (Tuesday). I had a huge writing day on Tuesday and I was very proud of myself…except that I haven’t written since. This is what happened:

Tuesday I wrote while in school. After school I had that dumb doctor’s appointment. I was there for an hour and a half. I told my doctor that I was still tired, my rash is still all over my body, I’m still coughing (although it’s much better than it was) and I’m still wheezing every once in a while. School doesn’t help because I’m walking around in the freezing cold which probably makes it worse. When she listened to me breath she said that I still have pneumonia, which I figured because that takes a long time to get rid of. So, they decided to check my oxygen level, then draw blood, then get a couple of x-rays and fun stuff like that. Then we found out that everything was normal. So they gave me a second inhaler and sent me on my way. So now I have two inhalers to take.

Wednesday, my boyfriend and two friends came over. Chris, my boyfriend, was going to help my friend Christina with her math homework. Carolyn, Christina’s sister, was having a party at school the next day and she needed to make oreo balls for it. If you don’t know what oreo balls are, you should look it up and go make some; especially if you’re a woman PMSing. They are FANTASTIC. All it is are oreos and cream cheese rolled into balls dipped in chocolate. Can we say Heaven? Anyway, the math online wouldn’t work so the four of us (well, Chris ditched us and sat in the other room because us three girls were getting a little crazy…) ended up making the oreo balls. Except we messed up (if you have ever made them before you’re probably saying, “How do you mess up on making oreo balls?” Well…if you met me and friends in person you’d answer yourself with, “Oh. Because it’s THEM making it.”). So we had to run to the store while it was snowing a lot and the roads were terrible. The car was slipping and sliding all over the place. It was a fun time.

Thursday, I had school and work and was utterly exhausted by the time I got home from work. So I didn’t write or anything because I ended up going to bed around 9:00. Yesterday, Friday, I had school and then work and then I had to babysit. I was going to write while the kids were in bed, but I never ended up babysitting. Again, I was in bed by 9:00. Here’s why:

I got out of my last class with a voice mail on my phone. It was my doctor. “Hi, Rachel! We got the results of your x-rays and guess what? We found traces of mono in your system. You don’t actually have it, but apparently you had it maybe about three months ago. So that’s good, you were sick and didn’t even know it! Even though you don’t have it now, your body may still be fighting a bit of it off because you’re weak from the pneumonia and such and that’s probably why you’re so tired and not getting any better.” I’m thinking to myself, three months ago was August. I was in Disney at the end of August. You mean to tell me that I had mono when I was in Disney? Wonderful. Anyway, I called her back and she told me that I should stay in this weekend and get some extra rest. If I don’t feel any better by Monday I should come back in.

This made me mad because I had to cancel babysitting last night, I had to cancel my hair appointment this afternoon, and I was supposed to go out with Chris and his friend tonight and I can’t even do that. I know for a fact that I am not going to be feeling any better by Monday because I have been like this all week. My nose is really stuffed up and has been all week. Trust me, every single day at work the kids said to me, “Why do you sound funny?” I’m thinking, You sound funny! I can at least pronounce all my words correctly!

Anyway, the only good thing about staying in all weekend is that I get to catch up on my writing. Missing four days, that means I’m down by 8,000 words. So I should be at 25,740 today. That would be the 6,000 I missed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and the extra 2,000 for today. As you can see, I stopped at 23,081 words. I have been writing all morning and I needed to take a quick break. I will most likely get some more writing in later today or tonight. I will definitely make it to the 25,740 words…possibly more. But I updated my word count on the NaNo website and on here because I wanted to fill you all in on what’s going on. Plus I wanted to make it seem like I’m still here.

When I write some more tonight, I may post again. If not, I’ll see you all tomorrow!

So, I Wanted To Update This…

…But I Have Nothing Intelligent To Say…

So, in my last post I said I was going to try to get back into the swing of updating this thing. Well, here I am, keeping my word. Except, I have nothing to talk about. Would you like to know why I have nothing to talk about? Of course you don’t, but I’m going to tell you anyway: I have not gotten anything done this summer.

School starts a week from today and work starts a week from tomorrow. My schedule will consist of this:

Monday: School 7-11:45 ; Work 2-6
Tuesday: School 7-2:30 ; (Possibly) Babysit 3-5/6
Wednesday: School 7-11:45 ; Work 2-6
Thursday: School 7-10:15 ; Work 1:30-6
Friday: School 7-12:30 ; Work 1:30-6
*I am taking five classes this semester, so chances are the free time that I will have will be homework time.

There you have it. I officially am going to have no life starting next week. And as you can see from my lack of life starting next week…all of the things that I had planned on doing this summer will be delayed. I may be able to chip away at these things here and there, but I’m not going to have nearly as much time to work at these things due to school and work.

What did I not get to do this summer? Let’s see…I was supposed to get teacher certified for my work, but I needed my official transcripts from my college. I e-mailed and called most of the summer and each person I spoke to told me to speak to an entirely different person. Hopefully, when I go there to get my textbooks for this upcoming semester, I can get a copy, but I won’t be certified in time for when I go back to school.

Another thing I did not get to do…become CPR and first aid certified for work. I was supposed to do that this summer, too, but there were no places that were doing it. My college does it, but they didn’t have the summer schedule up yet. I just found it today. However, that is only CPR, not first aid. Growl.

Thing number three: my MTEL testing. I was supposed to take that tomorrow. However, I only have a student ID and I did not know if that counted. So I called and called and called…left messages and never heard back or had a very frustrating conversation with a bunch of recordings that did not end well. So, I had to reschedule it. Otherwise, if I went there and I couldn’t take the test, I would have to make another appointment and pay all over again. The reschedule is already paid for because it’s coming from the test I was supposed to take tomorrow. Now, this one isn’t much of a big deal. My advisor told me to get it done over the summer so that when I transfer next year, it will increase my chances of getting into the college that I want. However, I am in the transfer program so the college I want to go to next will automatically accept me because of that. So, I’m going to take it in January so I can spend my first half of Winter break studying for it…yipee. I’m not complaining about post-poning it, but…it would have been kind of nice to get it over and done with.

Yet another thing: get my driver’s license. I had a plan that I was going to get it at the end of August. Well, Saturday is the beginning of September, so we all saw how that worked out. My new goal is to get it by the end of September…I’m going to be 19-years-old and with my busy schedule this semester, I cannot rely on everyone to drive me around all over the map. So, we’ll see how that goes.

Last thing I did not do this summer: when was the last time that I wrote? I think it was for the June Camp NaNoWriMo. That was a little over two months ago…sucks, doesn’t it? I was hoping to get something finished this summer, but that didn’t really work out that much. I guess I’ll just have to work at my novels bit by bit during this semester and see where that gets me. I wasn’t able to write on the way to or from Disney because I’m an idiot and put my notebook in my big bag, which was buried in the trunk…I didn’t write at all while I was in Disney because…well, I was in Disney, for God’s sake. Who has time to sit in the hotel room when you can be going out and swimming in the pool, seeing Tinkerbell and Winnie the Pooh, and riding on the Harry Potter ride at Universal?

Has anybody rode on the Harry Potter ride? I did it because I love Harry Potter. Never. Again. I can at least say that I got the experience and I braved it for the time being…but I will never ride on that ride again. They take your picture in the middle of the ride and I look like I’m sleeping because I was too focused on not getting sick. It looks quite funny.

Anyway, so I am slowly working my way back into a routine. When I start writing regularly again I will post more about that than random crap like I am now. At the very latest, I will post again next week. That is something that I really want to do…post at least once a week.

I am off to go set a couple of goals for myself…that way, when I post again I just might have done something productive.

Wait, How Long Has It Been?

I’m baaack…

Wow. It has been well over two months since I was last on here. And I’m not coming back at a good time, either…yes, I am going on vacation next week. When I first started this blog, I had a goal in my mind that I was going to update this thing at least once a week. Well, I guess I had a good run at first.

The thing is, I just haven’t had the time. I took summer courses at school, which didn’t end until the end of July. So, needless to say, I did not beat Camp NaNo in June. I was too busy with homework. On top of that, the preschool I work at did not have a summer program this year so I have been out of a job the past couple of months…I have been babysitting like crazy. Speaking of NaNo, though…this month is another Camp, correct? Well, I’m not doing that, either. Sad, I know. I was away for my boyfriend’s birthday from August 4th to the 9th. So this is the first full week of August I have been home. I’m leaving again on Sunday for (drum roll…) DISNEY! Then shortly after that I have my MTEL test and then it’s back to work and school.

So that’s what I have been doing this summer. School, babysitting, studying for MTEL, trying to get teacher certified, learning how to drive, and preparing for the upcoming school semester while organizing my room and preparing for vacation. Notice anything missing from that? Huh? What is this “writing” you speak of? Oh, that…yes, I remember that. That’s right–I have not written a single word since June NaNo…June 6th, to be exact, which is worse because I didn’t even make it to the middle of the month.

So, I have a plan…that may or may not work, but I’m hoping that it works. The plan involves more writing. To put it simply, I am planning on writing at least an hour every day. However, it may be difficult because of my busy schedule this semester, but I’m going to try it out. I’ll go more into that when the time gets closer…if you’re interested. Then again, you read this far, so I am going to assume that you’re interested. Or maybe you’re bored. Either way, thanks for reading!

I am going to get back into posting on here…once a week at the least. But I may update a little more to catch up on everything since the last time I posted.

Right now, I’m focusing on getting ready for Disney. I’m leaving early Sunday morning (August 19) and coming home on Monday (August 27). I’m going down there with my two older sisters, my aunt, my aunt’s mom, my uncle, and my three cousins. Is was my and my sisters’ Christmas present from my parents last year. We’re tagging along with our cousins because they know what they’re doing and we don’t. We’re driving down there and driving back, so that is going to be very interesting. I would rather drive than take an airplane, though.

I’m hoping to get some writing done while I’m down there, too. Maybe I can write a little in the car or right before we go to bed. I would like to update this here and there as well. I will have wi-fi in the hotel, but I have no iPod or a fancy phone. I’m on the iPad now, but this belongs to my mother, so I don’t know if she would want me to bring this down there…so the only device I could use would be my Nintendo 3DS, but I somehow get the feeling that would be difficult to update something like this…

Anyway, I’m slowly trying to get my act back together from the summer. So I’m sure that things will get better when school starts…hopefully. I’ll keep you updated.
