So remember a little while ago I told you guys that Kris got a Writer’s Digest magazine subscription for Easter? It had a list of the best 101 websites for writers. I mentioned that I was going to go through those websites bit by bit and pick out the ones I truly like and share them with you guys. I haven’t made a dent in looking at the websites thoroughly yet, but one kept catching my eye.
It’s called Critique Circle. I’m sure many of you have heard of it before. I kept wanting to go on there, but never got around to it with everything else going on in my life right now. Then I was reading other blogs and came across a post by Skye Hegyes. In her post Seven Step Editing she mentions Critique Circle.
I’m really glad I came across her post because she posted her editing process. I actually wrote it down so that I could give it a try and see if it works for me as well. One of the steps in her process is to post a few chapters on Critique Circle.
I’ll be honest, I had forgotten about the site for a little bit. So the other day I finally went on there and made an account. It’s a little intimidating at first because there is just so much the site has to offer. I didn’t know where to start. However, after exploring a little bit I can pretty much figure out the site.
All my writer friends on here should go check it out if they do not already have an account on there. You submit stories to be critiqued by others and you critique stories by other members in return–that’s the basic gist of it. There are also forums, all sorts of tools to use for your writing, a bookshelf, and so much more. I won’t do it justice by describing it to you; you’re going to have to go check it out for yourselves.
My username on there is Rachel3. I don’t have the premium membership, so I can’t be buddies with anyone, but at least you can look me up and if you have an account on there, I can look you up as well.
I hope you all give it a shot. I’m sure it’ll prove to be very useful once I get the hang of it.
I did very well today! I had the entire day to stay home and just write. I wanted to get a lot of editing done on Hunter. Honestly, I didn’t get much done on that, but I was still very productive.
I started off with Hunter. I said I had an epiphany with that novel and decided to outline each chapter on individual index cards so I can play around with the chapters to re-order them. Some chapters just might have to be completely re-written. But we’ll keep it easy for now.
I added a prologue to Hunter which was great because it added some background to the marriage of Cat’s (the protagonist) parents. Her mother is dead, but the prologue shows just how much Christina and Charles were not on the same page most of the time. Plus, there’s a part in the novel where a mutant has a message for Cat and I don’t think I ever explained it…yeah. So the prologue kind of added some insight to that, as well. It’ll force me to write that message in some where. So the prologue is actually helpful. I did not add it just because I felt like making the story longer.
I then outlined chapters one, two, and three. I have the entire novel edited on a hard copy, but I’m in the middle of re-typing it all up with the new edits. I add new edits that I didn’t put on the hard copy as I type it up because it’s as though I’m going through the novel a second time. So once I finish typing a new chapter, I’ll write the outline for it. So I was going to try to outline at least up to chapter four, but…I only typed up two pages of chapter four. Oh, well.
As I was going through this, I kept getting a lot a new ideas for the sequel, Hunted. So I decided to start writing that even though I told myself I was going to wait until Hunter was completely edited. I wrote the prologue and chapter one. I’m on page 20 with 5,775 words. I think that’s an excellent start so far.
Tomorrow I plan on at least getting through chapter four on Hunter and maybe write chapter two for Hunted. Of course, I had a large mocha frap from Starbucks to help me get through today. So we’ll see how productive I am tomorrow.
Yesterday, June 19, I actually got a good amount of writing done. Kris and I went to Barnes and Noble to be productive! She wrote a story that she started a while ago and I edited some more of Hunter. I got two and half chapters done…then our friend coincidentally ran into us again. Last time it was no coincidence, but this time it was. So the last hour or so of us being there was spent mingling with an old friend…and drinking half of his Starbucks java chip. 🙂 He wasn’t too happy about that, but I was.
So I got some editing done. Because I have three stories that need to be edited, I don’t want to start anything new. The only exception I’ll make to that Camp NaNo, which is next month. In which case I will have four novels to be edited. I decided that I am not going to start anything new until all (or at least two) of the novels are completely edited and ready to be published! Only while I’m looking for publishers I’ll start something new to pass the time. While I edit, if I get an itch to write, I’ll write FanFiction.
Speaking of FanFiction, that’s the other thing I wrote yesterday. Last night I hand-wrote the prologue and first chapter to my Pokemon parody Yellow. Then I typed it up because I was curious how long it was going to be. I hand-wrote 2,019 words. I was impressed with myself. The reason I’m hand-writing it is because when I go on vacation in July, I’m not going to be able to bring my laptop. I’ll be editing, but I also want to be able to write somethings, too.
As I stated, I edited some more of Hunter yesterday. I always write when I start the novel, when I finish, when I start editing, and when I finish editing. Then I record the number of pages, chapters, and words. Sadly enough, I haven’t kept up with that with all of my novels. I’m going to start keeping up with it again though when I start Camp NaNo next month. Anyway, I started that novel back in August 2011. Old, right? Unfortunately, I never recorded when I finished it. I’m sure it was at least six months later that I finished it or something.
My point is that it was almost two years ago that I started the novel. I was 17 at the time, but turned 18 less than a month later. I started the novel August 2 and my birthday is September 1. I don’t know if it was the age or I didn’t have my cup of coffee that day, or maybe I had just written a lot that day and was getting tired. But when I edited yesterday, I was on page 129 in the middle of chapter eleven, and I read this line:
“I know that that would James pleased.”
I have to say that I completely died laughing when I read that. I have no idea what I was thinking–well, I clearly wasn’t thinking at all. That line is 100% messed up! I’m pretty sure I meant:
“I know that James would be pleased.”
So I changed it to that. I just thought I would share. Hopefully this gave you all a good belly laugh as it did for me.
Back to business: Anyone who is doing Camp NaNo next month, the cabins are being assigned starting today! I just checked and I am already in a cabin. I have to admit that I am pretty shocked with my cabin. I have always been in a cabin with four other people. So, including myself, the total amount of writers in a cabin was five. Sometimes there were only four of us all together. Four or five total, never three or anything like that. Guess how many people now? Including me, there are eight of us. How crazy is that? I wonder why they assigned so many people to one cabin…I’m not complaining, but I just think that it’s a little weird. I didn’t know they put that many people in one cabin together.
I think I said everything I wanted to say. I’m focusing on editing, only to write FanFiction when I get bit by the writing bug. The only exception is Camp NaNo. I can’t wait for Camp! 🙂
Adair’s A Freak, Justin Lives Under A Rock, And Dominic Is Actually Normal…
Can we talk about my characters for a minute? I wrote half of chapter four today and I quickly realized how…interesting (for lack of a better word) my characters are.
In chapter four, Adair bothers the two boys to read a little of their stories to each other so they can see what each other has so far. I have quickly realized that all of chapter four they’re just going to be talking about Adair’s novel. Each chapter is their next meeting, which is only an hour and a half long. With the conversation they’re having about Adair’s novel, there is no way they’re going to be able to talk about all three novels in an hour and a half. Especially since when they started talking about her novel, they already only had an hour left.
In my last post I mentioned that I might plan our their novels a little bit. Well, I forgot to do that and I remembered when I was crawling into bed. So needless to say, I never planned out their books. As I wrote chapter four, I made everything up as I went along. I had Adair read her opening sentence and ask the boys what they thought about it. Well, I can tell you what I thought about it…it was crap. I read it over and over and over again and I said to myself, “Adair is completely weird.” I wondered what goes on in her mind and then I realized…Adair is me. I’m the one who wrote that sentence for her.
Justin rewrote the sentence for her, which came out a lot better, but Adair was pissed because her sentence was 41 words long and Justin’s re-write was 24 words. Then Justin was appalled because he can’t believe her biggest concern is the word count. And Dominic is just sitting there, along for the ride because he doesn’t want to get involved because he’s smart and normal.
But then Dominic and Justin both grilled her about this novel because it is the strangest thing ever. This is what we found out about the novel: Cerridwen is the main female, Zindel is the main male, the novel is in Zindel’s POV, they live in a forest, the plot of the novel is that the forest is in trouble and Cerridwen and Zindel need to save it, Victor is the bad guy, Cerridwen has the power of earth because she apparently is not human and evolved from a plant…which is why she has vines attached to her hair, and Zindel has a power, but we don’t know what it is, yet. Completely strange/ridiculous/I don’t even know what to call it, right? So Dominic and Justin are trying to make sense of this whole novel and are hoping that she changes it drastically. I’m just sad because my mind was capable of coming up with something like this.
Then throughout the whole chapter, Justin is freaking out about the names. I had Adair use obscure names because that’s just something she would do. But Dominic keeps pronouncing them wrong and Justin is just angry because Adair has names like that when she made fun of him for naming his main character John. Plus, Justin is wondering why the bad guy, Victor, has a normal name. On a random note: Justin lives under a rock. So far throughout the novel, Adair has mentioned Mario and Princess Peach, Link and Zelda, and The Sims games. He had no idea what she was talking about for all of them. He is a 27-years-old man and has never played video games…there is something wrong with that picture.
And the chapter isn’t even over, yet…
So, like I said…interesting characters, right? There certainly is never a dull moment with these guys. I have to give them some credit though because they really are fun to write.
I’m still writing The Blank Page. I don’t know how many chapters this novel is going to be. I’m on chapter four, I haven’t started it, though. I do think that for chapter four I’m going to have them all read what they have so far. Not all of it, of course. But it should be an interesting chapter. Justin hates everything that Adair does, Adair critiques and does everything and anything to bother Justin, and poor Dominic is there just wanting some real feedback on what he has so far.
It’ll be in a tough chapter to write because I know what Dominic’s plot is, but I haven’t even thought once about Adair’s novel or Justin’s novel. This chapter is going to be a long haul, but that’s part of the reason as to why I’m planning this chapter to be like this. If I’m going to write about three people writing three different novels, I need to know what each novel is about and how each novel is going to turn out. I’m sure whoever reads this series would like to know, as well.
In the last post I mentioned how I was thinking about writing their novels. Well, I think more on it now and I realize that if I wrote those three novels right now, it would certainly help me write The Blank Page and the rest of the series. I will already know the plot, the characters, the beginning, the middle, and the end. But, I’ll wing it for now. That is what editing is for, right?
So I set my timer for an hour once more and again I stopped before the timer went off. I stopped because I finished chapter three and I wasn’t really looking forward to writing a little of chapter four for three minutes and stopping right in the middle of it. Of course, I could have written more, but I wrote a lot today. I made it to 11,010 words. If I wrote another 281 words, then I would have broken my word count for day seven. This fake NaNo thing is really working out for me. It’s too bad that the real NaNo didn’t work out for me. But then again, I got pretty far in that novel and I did finish it in December, so I guess I can’t really complain.
That’s all for today. I may write a little bit more today, but I do doubt it. I have a few other things that I need to get done and I just have to say thank God it’s the weekend. I don’t have work today, which is a plus because that means I don’t have anywhere important to be later.
Before I update about my writing, I just wanted to throw this out there:
My sister and I admin quite a few RPG websites together, as you all should know. All the links for these websites are on my Come Find Me page on this blog. However, one of these websites is an RPG for the book series Warriors by Erin Hunter. If any of you know of these books, read them, and enjoy them, please consider joining our website. We’ve been very active lately and we’re looking for new members as we don’t have that many. It would be great to RP with some new faces. The website is called Stars Vs. Gems. Plus, if you enjoy writing, role-playing is great practice. If anyone is interested, please go there and check it out. If you join, that’s fantastic! Thank you. If you don’t, well thank you for checking it out, anyway. 🙂
Alright, now onto the good stuff!
I set a timer for myself this morning to write for one hour. I have work this afternoon and then I have a wake to go to right after, so I knew that I was going to have no time to get anything done tonight. I set aside an hour for myself to get some writing done hoping that I could get a lot done in an hour. I have to admit that I didn’t write for the whole half hour because when I had about twenty minutes left, Comet, my dog, decided to storm into the basement and demand that I take him outside so he could pee. How can anyone say no to that? Especially when he’s a golden retriever and he’s bigger than you when he jumps up on you.
Anyway, when I came back in from outside, I wrote for a little longer because I had about ten more minutes left. Then I decided to stop when I had about two minutes left because I ended at a good spot. I could have kept on writing, but I wanted to post on here and I have a few other things that I need to get done before I go to work.
I’m happy to say that I made it to 8,193 words though. 🙂 Because I’m doing a fake NaNo, that means I got passed today’s word count and tomorrow’s word count. Of course, I’m still going to write tomorrow because I need to keep this up and get myself into the habit of doing this. Plus, tomorrow is Saturday and I have absolutely nothing going on tomorrow. Which is good because then I can get a lot of writing done…Sunday is going to be a very busy day for me so I don’t know how much writing I’m going to be able to get done.
The Blank Page is going really well. I am still in love with the characters and even though I never planned out this novel, it’s actually moving along. Dominic’s story is making a lot of sense, which is good. I haven’t really talked about Justin or Adair’s stories yet, so we’ll see how those work out. I was also thinking that I might write these three novels for real. I can post them on here as well as FictionPress. I have an account on there, you can go to the Come Find Me page…again. Of course, it might not be for a while that I actually write those stories because it’s not like I’m going to get them published or anything. I want to focus more on getting a couple novels published first. Maybe I’ll work on those stories bit by bit while I write the Writers Group saga and when the series is all done, I’ll start posting chapters from the three novels.
That’s all for today, but to close this post I just wanted to say something about a man who recently passed away: I know none of you will know who I am talking about, but as you may have noticed, I said I’m going to a wake tonight. The man who passed away was named Dick. Dick was a wonderful old man from my church. He was the nicest person you would ever meet. He came to church every Sunday and was known by everyone. He tried his best, and always succeeded, in helping everyone. No matter what the issue, he was always there to help figure it out. He had a heart of gold and was extremely smart. He had a love of geology and definitely knew his stuff. Dick went peacefully in his sleep early Wednesday morning losing his long battle with lung cancer. He had been sick for years and was housebound due to this illness. Although he’s in a better place, we all miss him terribly. If you’re religious, even though you never knew the man, feel free to send a quick prayer to Heaven for his wife, children, and grandchildren. Thank you.
On that note, I’ll update again tomorrow. Try to stay warm and if you’re living someplace warm, then…I hate you. Have a nice day. 🙂
Comet is actually being quiet right now…I gave him a bone, that’s why. Chip is whining because I did not give her a bone. The reason for that is because she has about a million bones hidden throughout this house. If she really wants a bone, she can use that tiny powerful nose God gave her and find at least one of the many bones. I know she has at least two…one is buried in my pillow and the other is buried in my blankets. Damn dog. Hunter is howling at absolutely nothing, but I think it’s just too quiet for him…or maybe he thinks he’s home alone. I don’t know why he cries like that. Raph, I think, is finally going into “hibernation mode” like she should have a couple weeks ago when the weather started getting cold, but instead she got more hyper.
Right. She should not be doing that in the fall. However, I noticed that she has been “redecorating” less and has not been trying to walk through the tank glass as much to get out. I think she thinks she can walk through walls. No, instead she has been like this:
Yes, she was in that position for a very long time. Of course, as I type this, she is knocking on the glass shouting, “Let me out!” I can’t complain, though. I like working while she’s walking around. I feel as though I have company. This is what it comes down to…I have no friends.
Just kidding, I do. But they’re all at school right now. You wanna know why I’m not at school? I only had one class today and it was cancelled. I am super excited! Not because I was able to sleep in, no, because it was my health class. And my teacher for my health class bites. I mean today we were supposed to meet in the library to do research on our projects. Of course, I’m doing something else that I will not go into because it’s a long story, but to keep it short and sweet, I’m exempt from the project. So I don’t even know what I would be doing, anyway. It would probably have been nothing.
But this is great because now I have the whole day to myself…well, until I have to go to work. But I would much rather be at work than go to school…especially when I have health. What am I to do with myself? I could go some more homework done so I have less to do while working on NaNo. I could work on outlining my NaNo some more. I could clean, I could sing and dance, I could play video games…preferably Pokemon. But I just don’t know because I am just way too excited right now!
Speaking of NaNo, I am outlining Saving Each Other (SEO) and I decided that I might as well write it for NaNo. It’s almost the middle of October and I don’t know how long it will take me to outline SEO plus another novel and then decide between the two. I’m on chapter twelve for SEO and I have no idea how many more chapters there will be.
The other reason as to why I decided to write it for NaNo is because I was thinking a lot about it the other day…well, yesterday. In the shower. I don’t know about any of you people out there, but I do my best thinking when I am in the shower…or trying to sleep. Which is probably why I never actually sleep…huh. Anyway, in the shower I was thinking about the novel and thinking about the outline and realized, “I’m on chapter twelve, but really, nothing’s happened yet.” I mean, let’s face it: at this point, I’ll be on chapter 100 and the plot will just be beginning. Then I realized…what is the plot?
Seriously, I really had to ask myself this question. I honestly had no idea what the plot was. I came up with a cool title, I made up some awesome characters, I even came up with a cover for the novel. But what is the plot? Someone is after them, yes, I understand that. But who? And why? I got nothing. But when I was in the shower, I came up with a wonderful idea. I am not going to tell you what that idea is because I don’t want to give anything away, but…I guess you could say that it’s kind of “cliche” for a fantasy novel. But that’s alright, because I have tricks up my sleeve.
The summary for SEO is in the post right below this one…just so you know. So scroll down. A lot. Or…turn to the last page or something, I don’t really know how my blog works…I never really look at the finished product. I just type, proofread on here and hit “publish.” The summary was something quick I whipped up for you guys. It’s not the “final” summary and still needs a bit of work. Just a warning…
So I still don’t know what I am going to do with myself today, but I know first things first: get some more coffee. I drank it all while writing this. Don’t worry…it’s decaf. We ran out of caffeinated. Boo. 🙁
