I borrowed a paperback copy from the kid I babysit. The decision to review and all opinions are my own.

Genre: Realistic Fiction, Middle Grade, Graphic Novel

Series: Smile, 2
Publisher: Scholastic/Graphix
Publication Date: August 26, 2014

Sisters (Smile, 2) by Raina Telgemeier is a realistic fiction graphic novel based upon the author’s life with her family. Raina, the protagonist, wishes she had a sister. When her parents get pregnant and, sure enough, it’s a girl, Raina realizes having a sister isn’t all that great. Or is it?

This story is told through the present with the mother, Raina, and her two younger siblings, going on a road trip to Colorado. Yes, they’re all stuck in a car together. While they camp out, go to the zoo, and do other fun activities in the states they drive by, something happens that warrants a flashback. Then the book tells a story from when the girls were a lot younger – trying to get pets, their baby brother being born, and more.

The storytelling is amazing as is the art and hilarious dialogue. When reading this with my eight-year-old, I was actually laughing out loud throughout most of it. Maybe it’s because I have two older sisters that I saw a bit of us in the story.

If you enjoy graphic novels, Raina Telgemeier’s work, or haven’t tried these books yet, now is your chance and you should.
