This week’s short story is brought to you by the prompt, “battery.”
I hope you enjoy the story.
“You need to turn it over.”
“I don’t need to do anything. The battery is in how it’s supposed to be.”
“If it is, then why isn’t working?”
Richard huffed an exasperated sigh. He glared at his brother, still jamming his thumb onto the guide button of the remote, though nothing was happening on the TV.
“Seriously, I think you put the batteries in upside down,” Joe said. “There’s a plus and a minus. I learned about it in school.”
“You learned about batteries in school?” Richard asked, turning the remote back over and opening the back revealing the two double-A batteries.
“Well, no… we were talking about magnets. But it’s the same thing, right?”
“For some reason I don’t think it works that way.”
Joe shrugged, flipping over onto his stomach stretching across the couch. Richard pulled out one of the batteries and nodded.
“They’re in the right way.”
“Maybe they’re dead.” Joe craned his neck to look over his brother’s shoulder.
“Get me a new pair then,” Richard said.
“Because you’re the one who wants to watch TV.”
“I’m not the one who wants to fix the remote though.”
Richard glared at him. “So you’re going to get up and manually press the channel and volume buttons on the TV?”
Joe clamped his mouth shut.
“Exactly,” Richard said, exasperated. “Go get me two new batteries.”
Joe sat up, swinging his legs over the edge of the couch accidentally kicking his brother. Richard glared at him again but Joe didn’t seem to notice.
“Wanna watch a movie?”
Richard sighed. “Are you kidding me?”
“The DVD remote should be fine.”
“You’re that lazy to get up and get the batteries?”
“Who’s going to get up and put in the DVD?” Richard asked.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Joe laughed. “You know it takes us an hour to decide on a movie.”
Richard opened his mouth to retaliate but he knew his brother was right. He shrugged in defeat, tossed the TV remote onto the coffee table, and leaned back against the couch. “So… what movie do you want to watch?”
“I don’t know. What do you want to watch?”
“…This is going to be a long night.”
