The eight-year-old I babysit for absolutely loves horses. I saw this book and thought it might be something she’d enjoy. Luckily, I was right. She and I read this book together, reading alternate chapters to one another. It was fun to read a book together and it’s one we both enjoyed. She was engaged, asking questions, trying to figure out what would happen next with me.

The Magic Forest is the first book in the Fairy Unicorns series where the protagonist, Zoe, follows her cousin, Holly, into their aunt’s garden late at night. Holly has some magic dust that gets onto Zoe, shrinking her down. Thus, bringing her to the magic forest.

She meets many Fairy Unicorns, making a friend with Astra. Sadly, the trees of the forest are dying and the Unicorn King has been kidnapped. Together, Zoe and Astra go on an adventure to save everyone.

For a book for young readers, the plot was well-done. As I said, the kid I babysit was constantly trying to figure out what was going to happen next and engaged with the story. The characters were fun and the worldbuilding was cute. I think, if this series existed when I was a kid, I’d enjoy it myself.

Even as an adult, I enjoyed it and will try to find the next book for us to read together too.
