Musical Mondays: This Is Me (The Greatest Showman)

This Is Me by Keala Settle | Musical Mondays | Inspiration | The Greatest Showman | RachelPoli.com

I thought we were due to have another Musical Monday post. There’s been so much hype around The Greatest Showman and while I have yet to see the movie, I’ve listened to the soundtrack over and over again.

All the songs are so inspirational and I think it speaks to anyone who wants to inspire people, make a difference in the world, or who are just creative at heart.

The song This Is Me is performed by Keala Settle and she has a beautiful voice. It’s all about being you, shooting for your dreams, and not letting anyone say you can’t do something or get in your way.

When you’re trying to make a living as a writer, blogger, freelancer, whatever… it’s really hard to stay positive. You just have to take it day by day. Work hard and stay focused. Remember you can do it no matter what. Your time will come to shine.

I chose this particular video for the song because Keala was nervous to sing the song. I felt as though the song taught her a lesson in a way. I found it inspirational. The actual song doesn’t start for about a minute in, but I recommend listening to the whole video anyway.

Enjoy.

I am not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they say
‘Cause we don’t want your broken parts
I’ve learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they say
No one’ll love you as you are
But I won’t let them break me down to dust
I know that there’s a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away ’cause today, I won’t let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades and
Reaching for the sun (we are warriors)
Yeah, that’s what we’ve become (yeah, that’s what we’ve become)
I won’t let them break me down to dust
I know that there’s a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
This is me
and I know that I deserve your love
’cause there’s nothing I’m not worthy of
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
This is brave, this is proof
This is who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come (look out ’cause here I come)
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum (marching on, marching, marching on)
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I’m gonna send a flood
Gonna drown them out
Oh
This is me

    • I will definitely be getting it when it comes out on DVD! I want to see it so bad. I’ve listened to the soundtrack on a loop though. At least I’ll be able to sing along when I see the movie, lol.

    • Isn’t it beautiful?! I’m also amazed at how many people are saying they haven’t seen this movie because it’s so popular. I mean, yeah, I haven’t seen it, but everyone I know IRL has.

  1. You know.. over 30 years ago, I saw Barnum, in fact it was the first major theatrical production I took my husband to see. I have been in plays and been to live theatrical production all my life, but not so, him. It was electric. THIS SONG, gave me that same feeling. I still have tears running down my face and the video is over. Thank you, so much for sharing. I will never forget this, much like I have never forgotten that night I saw Barnum, the musical. ❤

    • Aw, that’s so nice to hear. 🙂 I’m glad it spoke to you on that level. I cried when I first saw the video as well and I even watched it a couple more times while writing this post. The song itself is just so good and inspiring and Keala’s voice is amazing as is the chorus in the background. They’re all wonderful and it’s great to see them all get into it.

  2. Yes that video she is wonderful; her voice is so raw and the song takes on a whole new meaning. I would also recommend watching From Now On during when they were seeking to get green lighted. So that vid and the soundtrack version so so so fantastic are my favorite versions Keala performs. Also, good comparison reminder for writers and anyone. 🙂

    • I thought this video was so fitting because I felt as though the message of the song got through to Keala at that moment as well. It was perfect. It really was a beautiful moment that brought me to tears.
I have seen From Now On and that’s just as good. This movie and its songs are really making history!

Let me know what you think!
