Blessings by Anna Quindlen book review rachel poli

Title: Blessings
Author: Anna Quindlen
Genre: Literary fiction
How I got the book: I bought it

Summary (from Amazon):

In this instant, the world of the estate called Blessings is changed forever. The story of Skip Cuddy, the Blessings caretaker, who finds a baby asleep in that box and decides he wants to keep her, and of matriarch Lydia Blessing, who, for her own reasons, decides to help him, Blessings explores how the secrets of the past affect decisions and lives in the present; what makes a person, a life, legitimate or illegitimate, and who decides; the unique resources people find in themselves and in a community.

My Review (may contain spoilers!):

I’ve read books by Anna Quindlen and have enjoyed them. When I read the summary of this book, I thought it sounds sweet and had a great premise. That plus the fact that I knew the author made me buy it.

It wasn’t that great.

I was only interested in some of the characters. Mrs. Blessings had an interesting personality and I enjoyed following Skip and his journey with the baby. That was about it. There were too many other characters that I had a hard time following and they just weren’t important to me.

Most paragraphs were about a page long making the book just feel… long. It was a tedious read even though it was only 226 pages.

The overall story didn’t capture my attention and I found myself skimming through some of the pages and often forgetting what I just read that I had to go back and reread it again.

Blessings by Anna Quindlen gets out of 5 stars.

Favorite Quote:

“The baby belongs to the person who loves her the most,” Mrs. Blessings replied.
“The law assumes that that person is the one who gave birth to the person.”
“Then the law is an ass.”
–Anna Quindlen, Blessings
