Title: Dorothy Must Die
Author: Danielle Paige
Genre: Fantasy
How I got the book: I bought it
Summary (from Amazon):
I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero. But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a road of yellow brick—but even that’s crumbling.
What happened? Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas. I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I’ve been trained to fight. And I have a mission: Remove the Tin Woodman’s heart. Steal the Scarecrow’s brain. Take the Lion’s courage. And—Dorothy must die.
My Review (may contain spoilers!):
This book was completely unlike the movie, The Wizard of OZ–which is a good thing.
I’ve read retellings before and they’re always quite similar in a way to the original. Dorothy Must Die simply borrows a few main characters and turns them completely into her own. To me, that’s exactly the way to do it. Kudos to Danielle Paige!
In this version of the story, Dorothy is completely evil. She has the Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion on her side as well as Glinda. The Wicked are the good guys as they recruit a young woman, Amy Gumm, from Kansas to help them out. Amy is supposedly the only one who can kill Dorothy.
I honestly have no complaints about this book. The only thing was that it was pretty gory at some parts. I sometimes wondered if I was reading a horror novel instead. But I have a weak stomach, so that may just be me.
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige gets 5 out of 5 stars.

Love that quote.
It’s a good one. 🙂
Mhm I’m curious as to whether you pick the quote out while reading or after you finish the book?
During. As I read I usually come across a quote and my mind instantly reminds me that I need a quote for the review on my blog. I normally don’t think of my blog while reading so when that happens I roll with it.
Sometimes I come up with multiple quotes by the end of the book and have to pick one.
Mmm I do the same as well. One line will strike me and then I write it down or take a picture of the page.
Yeah, I take a pic and then have to go digging through my phone later, lol.
I have to do that as well.
Ive heard of this book – a great reminder will pop it on my list.
It is a great read, I must say.
Awesome quote, and now I want to read the book even more. 🙂
You should. It’s a good read. 🙂
People have lot to lose when they sacrifice but plenty to gain in terms of heart!!
That’s true. 🙂
Si 🙂 Thank you 🙂
Definitely on my list now. Always loved the Wizard of Oz!
You won’t even realize it’s Oz! It’s good though. 🙂
